Never understood promise rings myself. Doesn't an engagement ring mean the same thing? It's like a ring that says you are going to get married.

Maybe a promise ring is an inexpensive engagement ring.

A promise ring means that I am 15 and my boyfriend is 16 and we need to grow the **** up. I have always thought those things were lame. SO much worse when your adults. If you like it, put a REAL ring on it and call it an ENGAGEMENT RING.

A promise ring can be given to someone as a pre-engagement ring. It more or less symbolizes "I promise that one day we'll get engaged"

I would give my girl a promise ring if I wanted to get engaged, but felt like we needed more time together. I think I'd want to be together 4 years steady before getting engaged, so i think a promise ring is a good idea in between that period of time.

Lol if this is your attitude, I would want to put a promise ring on your finger too vs an engagement ring.

brb not sure if girl wants to be with me or is one of those crazy girls too caught up in the social hype of marriage and commitment, so better make her wait as long as possible and give her a promise ring just to rustle her jimmies.

If a girl needs marriage and commitment right away, and isn't willing to wait as long as I want to, then immediate red flag and I dump her

Never heard of a promise ring till I moved to US, personally. This would not fly in Europe. It would be considered childish.

Why is it pathetic?

Would you rather not have a promise ring, and be with someone for 6 years before getting engaged. Or get a promise ring after 2 years, and the guy say he loves you and wants to marry you now, but would like a few more years to make sure everything is more certain before taking such a big step. Which would be the sensible thing for both sides, given the divorce rates.

I personally would rather have a few years of dating, then a few years of being engaged. But woman seem to be appalled by long engagements and find it very offensive.

Promise rings always struck me as something invented by the jewelry industry to sell more rings. What matters is whether the girlfriend in question likes them.

If you love each other that much then there will be a mutual understanding/aggreement of a legit future together, no pretend ring is needed.

But im a uk brah, so would never degrade myself or fiance with 5 year old love. Just be a man, and show her you're a man be giving her a real commitment.

I didn't grow up in the US so be patient with me here, ok? Here's how I have always seen the development of a relationship:


- Hey want to grab a coup of coffee?
- How about we stop sleeping with other people?
- Want to move in together?
- Will you marry me?

Ok I am being funny here, but really I don't get it, commitment is something you just take, it's not a ring. Plenty of people are together in a serious relationship without talking marriage. Heck, plenty of them NEVER talk marriage, and are together for decades, have children together, etc. Just TALK to each other for gawd's sake, discuss where your relationship is, and where it's going, and what you both want. And stop following someone else's timetable, life isn't an article on Cosmo. Who said you have to get engaged after X time, and then get married after X time or else. Or else what?

When you see all your peers getting divorced after a year or two of marriage, and you've been in enough relationships, you begin to realize that jumping into a marriage quickly is a recipe for disaster.

I would argue that if you love each other that much, then no ring at all is necessary to show your commitment.

They are for teenagers (on a side note, my best friend (at 16) gave his girl friend (at 15) a promise ring - and they actually did have a wedding 12 years later!). But that's pretty rare, isn't it?

My peers relationships are none of my concern.

Been with my gf nearly 3 years, and shes lived with my family n me since last november, I have felt the deppressing feeling of another human sucking every minute of my day....... Guess what still love her, Im doing fine with the engagement ring, not a promise ring in sight

I think a lot of it still boils down to social norms etc, but real love is real love
