One machine that is 100% useless is the assisited dip and chin up machine. I have never needed assistance to do either dips or chins/pullips due to being a very good athelete.
The following machine would IMO be of benefit to only 100% beginers, it has no place in a bodybuilding gym
Yes they are doing assisted pullups, its excusable if yo weigh 300lbs and are cutting like these 2 atheletes are doing, but these are the top .001% people who go to gyms.
Also Evan is no Dennis Wolf when it comes to back, just because he is doing assisted chinups does not mean its the best thing to do.

I suppose one has to find a balance. Even pulleys and leg press and leg extentions can also be called machines. Imagine doing legs without leg extentions and 45 degree leg press?
BTW I prefer the seated leg curl machine to the lying down one.
i actually love the leg press! the weight plate loaded leg presses are my favorite!

I think its great.
There is not a chance I could ever do non-assisted dips after doing chest and shoulders, so IMO its great, especially if you work out on your own.
Edit: Yes Rommy, because Centopani is not on Wolfs level, just because he is using assisted pullups. Dont know if I should laugh or cry, please, please tell me the difference between assisted pullups and a machine pulldown..?
Fully agreed, amazing hammer strength . btw what do u think is the best approach when it comes to seat height , where exactly do u support your chest on the pad?
Personally, One arm at a time, and hold back with your other forearm against the seat works best for me. You get a full stretch, and takes pressure off your lower back.

This is actually exactly what I do. Allows for a good stretch and contraction, and I can go pretty heavy on it.

i love hitting assisted pullups at both the beginning and very end of my lat work
Why not use the lat pull down machine?

Whats wrong with the lat pull down machine, its easy to use FullROM with it.

Exactly this, IMO the assisted DIP and assisted PULLUP machines are not really nescessary, its a waste of gym real estate, it would be much better to swap the assisted PULL/DIP machine for a squat rack especially when floor space is limited.
Also dips are a multi joint movement big enough to do as your main exercise, there are many more exercises for tris that you could slot in at the end of the workout.

Intresting thread. Some machines definatly seem to work the muscle they intend to, back and bi machines are good also ab machines not bad.

Since beginners probably make up 90% of the average gym's membership, an assisted dip/pullup machine would be very useful indeed.
I don't know if this falls into the category but I heard prostate isn't kept healthy if constant pressure is done on it, I heard it is one of issues for many bikers. Not sure if the pressure from heavy military press puts many pressure on prostate, but according to my personal experience, I think it does, if I sit straight on the bench instead of sitting like inclined bench manner (I can feel the pressure around my prostate if I am sitting vertically with heavy military press)
A machine I have never been comfortable with and didn't really feel working was the peck deck
Never liked this particular design of pec deck, horrible, horrible machine. The only one I've ever enjoyed using was a LifeFitness model where you held the arms out wide in a true d/b fly style. Will find a pic once I get home from work. Generally though it's dumbbell flys for me over machines, prefer the feeling.
EDIT Not the best pic but the only one I could find tonight

Machines have their place IMO. I use a combination of free weights and machine weights. Hammer Strength is a personal fav. Cybex has some great stuff too. The Hammer Strength Lat Pull Down, the Iso-Lateral Low Row, are almost always a part of my back routine. I'm a big fan of their Hammer Press and Pec Deck/Rear Lateral machines. The only problem is being a taller guy, some machines don't always cater for a full ROM.
generally I prefer to keep machines for Higher Reps. They restrict the body's natural ROM too much to go too heavy on most of them.
My gym recently replaced the good version of this machine with this peice of garbage.
Two main problems with it.
1) It in no way fits the ergonomics of any human being.
2) See those yellow handles for gripping. Well they actually adjust the height of the two bars.

THIS, the machine you are talking about allows for different length arms, and as you say is as near as you can get to a dumbell fly using a machine. The machine Sex News posted is a one size fits all and that is the problem with them IMO.

It's crap to be honest, like most of the old Nautilus stuff. They work with chains instead of cables so the movement isn't very fluid at all.
I'm not saying your wrong. The machines I've used I've (I'm talking nautilus) have all been great. I've probably tried about 5 or 6, an overhead single arm curl (great) and the lat pulldown machine were awesome.

Do any brands still make this machine?
Best side lateral machine...so much better than the hammer strength one like the one above. My gym has it, but it's an old school gym. Havn't seen it in any new gyms

we have one of those at our gym. can't remember what brand it is though. oddly enough those are great for front delt raises!

My gym has one of those horrible things too..tried it once out of curiosity and my shoulder joint hurt for weeks.
I also find myself agreeing with Rommy..the normal pec deck is a horrid machine, the outstretched arms version is much better (always a damn wait to use it in the gym for that reason though)
