I'm sure that most of you have already seen this, but I saw it today for the first time and it rang so true!
My gym is full of newbies, especially in the evening and I've seen all of these types so far

I'm lucky that I train at 6am on weekdays --- it's only the serious regulars then (although there is the odd 'coach' who drives me mad ). When I go on a weekend or in the afternoon it's a different story ---- they're all there
I had a good laugh
I can see a lot of advantages with the home gym (except that my wife would keep coming in to bug me)

that was awesome. I train in my basement but wouldn't mind venturing out to a public gym if I get to see 'The Face'. lol. Also just realized that I'm a meathead. haha!

Lately I've been seeing a lot of Philosophers. While I think it's just dandy that they have a deep spiritual connection to physical training I do wish they'd shut the hell up about it and maybe get the hell out of my way.Last edited by mark74; 02-08-2013 at 05:39 AM. Reason: Spelling

I'm not a purebread at all, dad was full blooded meathead while mom was 1/2 coach and 1/2 face, so I have a mixture of all these

We get alot of the "show off " guys in my gym.. One in particular must have been a high school gymnast.. He's in his early twenties and is always swinging around, doing upside down pushups and stuff on the pull up bars.. Some dude was over there showing his chic how to use the dip assist machine, he ran over, jumped on the pull up bars and started putting on a show.. Had to laugh..

Heheheheh....I've seen the series of these videos and have seen most of the types at various gyms....I try so hard not to watch people, but being in the kinesiology program as a certified trainer with the NSCA, I cannot help to observe form with some. Some people just stand out. Kind of made me feel a bit better to watch these dudes who appeared to be seasoned lifters....until their squats were done all on their tippy toes (can you say knee pain and injury?) and it was 135 lbs, but when I went heavier than that to assess my strength, I only leaned forward after the third rep and could feel that I was not handling the weight, so I stopped and racked it....I try not to be an ego lifter, hahahahaha. But seriously, I so much want to stop some people when they have bad form, but at our school's gym if we are not employed there, it is pretty much a no-no. I do however have some who use me to assist them in assessing form.
I guess the other day I was a bit of an "@sshole" in that I hoarded a few pairs of kettlebells. Normally, we have a good open space for kettlebell work, but our female athletes came in and used the area to stretch, and a few walked in my path of swinging without caring that I could clock one accidently upside the head....so, doing different complexes with the bells and needing various weights, I took what I needed to our long turf. This guy came up to me and said, "you know, some people might not be as brave as I am to approach you and ask for one of the kettlebells you are hoarding". I almost did not know what to say. I explained that I took what I needed from the area due to the female athletes using up the space. He came back with, "well, I have watched you use the kettlebells for the last half hour or so....." I said, "oh, so you have been WATCHING my workout?! One thing, most people have no problem with asking for equipment. Another, I am never intimidating. And yet another, if you have been paying that much attention to my workout, you are not working hard enough!" I felt like a real b!tch, but really, hardly anyone uses the kettlebells, and it turned out he did not even need any of the ones I had! He used a 8kg on a BoSu ball to do goblet squats. None of the staff thought I did anything wrong, and in fact many of the trainers and other members do the same thing.
Eh, sorry for the bit of a rant....I guess being a newbie once, I had lots of people eyerolling at me....prolly still do, LOL....being in a gym where there are no mirrors and having to rely on how my body feels and occassionally having form assessed by our pros, I still am so self-conscious that if I might lose form, someone is going to see only that part of the lift and think, "oh *eye roll* a newbie", LOL!

I've definitely done some of those, particularly "the face."
I had a coach the other day (looked a lot like that guy). I was doing low bar squats with Rippetoe form (and pretty well done, I think), and had the "coach" come up and let me know that he couldn't help but notice that I had the bar a little too low and that I needed to pick a spot high on the wall to fix my eyes on because I wasn't keeping my head up enough...Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.
I'm not one to think that how much muscle a guy has or what he looks like necessarily means he does or doesn't know what he's talking about, but it's always interesting when a guy who clearly has less strength and mass tries to correct you on something you've spent some time working on based on the teaching of one of the most respected strength coaches in the world.

Good stuff man! LOL
I am pretty much "the face" to a certain degree... I try as hard as I can to control it but it's hard when you are trying to squeeze the last rep out!
The other day I was a bit of the coach as well. I was doing cable crosses and a couple of thug looking kids wanted to work in. They were polite so of course I let them. One of the two dropped off after a set but the other stayed on for 3. He was walking away and I yelled at him: "You're not done!". I moved the cables to the floor and showed him how to do low cable crosses. He walked away with a smile on his face and a hurtin on his pecs..Luceo non uro - "I shine not burn"
