How much exercise do i really need to supplement my diet?

My girlfriend keeps telling me "you can't just diet, you have to workout," and i tell her as long as i'm eating less calories than i need, i'll be losing weight. So far i have been losing weight. I have been doing occasional push ups and core exercises, but nothing fancy. Would the majority of you out there agree with me that if i am strict with my diet, i will be able to reach my goal of flattening my stomach? (Not a six pack, just flattened.) I feel like when i get too hung up on exercise, or start running, or lifting weights, i end up getting burned out before i reach my goal. But following a healthy calorie deficit is something i feel i can keep up for months until i get the job done.

If you aren't lifting weights, nothing good will happen, you'll just end up a skinny fat version of your former fat self.

If you're talking cardio, none is "needed", but some is helpful. It depends on the deficit you're already getting from your nutrition.

2-3 ~45 minute sessions a week shouldn't be anything to get hung up over - really, for overall health, you should be doing some sort of regular exercise. Yes, diet is the big picture, and your stomach should eventually flatten, but just how little you are going to end up weighing when you get there IME correlates to inclusion/exclusion of resistance training.

I can't imagine a world without exercise.Just start lifting and doing things in the gym you enjoy doing. If you feel your starting to get burnt out take a day or two off and change it up.

You are right. You will lose weight just dieting but you will look like a holocaust victim.

You don't have to be killing yourself in the gym everyday. Go three days a week for 45 mins and do some starter strength type routine and get enough protein in and you would be way better off then just eating a deficit and sitting on the couch.
