I've been following this on the news. The French have certainly done a bang-up job in Mali. I was sick and tired of reading of the atrocities and the destruction of invaluable historic treasures in Timbuktu by these ignorant, arrogant, islamist radicals strutting around. Go Frenchies!!! It's easy to be indifferent, or even a little ungracious when it comes to the French, but I'm proud of them. I hope they hunt down every last one of the sorry (%*$&%&#$!!!!

As they should, Ma'am.
But I think it is, at least, somewhat comforting to know that the French Para's have went in there to clean out that nest of vipers.

I agree, but I fear for our world sometimes.

It broke my heart when I read of this last week. The destruction of a cultural heritage by modern day thugs . . . . phuck, I can't even put it into words.
The French army has always been an easy target for a jab or wisecrack. I will bag on the French Military no more.

That's the same thing the Taliban did in Afghanistan. There were these two huge Buddha statues carved into a mountain. Even though Afghanistan hadn't had many buddhists in a LONG time, the whole country saw them as historic landmarks and monuments of Afghan history. But what existed for 2,000 years the Taliban demolished in just minutes.
They also went into a lot of museums and destroyed paintings and other works of art... Especially things that depicted the human form. Funny thing though, when my mom was about 6 or 7 years old, she starred in the lead of one of Afghanistan's first feature length films. Until then most movies in the theaters were Indian, American and European movies that were dubbed over.
Anyway, growing up as a kid I'd always hear my mom talk about it and she'd always say that once the war w/the Russians was over in Afghanistan, she'd somehow try to find the footage. But once the Taliban took over she knew it would most surely be destroyed.
OK BUT, as soon as the Taliban were booted out, someone discovered a huge cache of hidden art and media that some brave soul stashed away and in it was my mom's movie! The people that discovered it contacted the director who was living in Seattle at the time and sent the original... and then the director made a copy and sent them out to as many remaining cast and crew members as he could get a hold of.
It was so cool to finally see w/my own eyes something that my mom had always talked about. Someone actually uploaded the whole thing to Youtube, I'll see if I can post it if anyone is interested.

Thankfully the French will have some quality help soon!!
The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold private consultations on Mali on Wednesday. The Security Council is likely to wait until the end of February to adopt a new resolution authorizing a U.N. peacekeeping force for Mali, a well-informed U.N. diplomat said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Kel, what's the name of the movie? I just looked at YouTube and found an old film called "Like Eagles" and had a quick look. Is that the flick?

Yea, I remember the statue thing. You just couldn't believe your eyes...the ignorance. Deliberately destroying thousands of years of history in seconds. The story of your Mom is amazing. I can only imagine. I too would love to see it!
