Is 400# respectable for deadlift newb?

Apologies if this has been done to death...but I have read a lot of conflicting info.

Little background, 6' 250 lbs, age 32. Picked up strength training after 13 year layoff though never dead lifted till last October. Felt like my natural max as an average Joe on the street may have been 350. I worked up to a 400lb max in December and started a Coan/Phillipi program en route to 450.

My eventual goal would be to hit 500 within the next 1.5 years. Think I am on the right track? I only wonder because I have read many threads with dudes wanting to desperately get to 400, but other times I read of dudes being unimpressed by watching a dude pull 500.

Even though the amount of weight you can lift doesn't mean anything to majority of people in this section, I will say good job and continue making progress till you hit your goal.

this. it doesnt' really matter to anyone else. what we like more is progress. going from 135-155 is just as great as finally obtaining a 500 pound bench. obviously one is harder than the other, but progress is progress.

Although 500 is not a lot to active powerlifters over 200# bodyweight, its still a ton of weight to be able to pull correctly. Sometimes we forget, but I most certainly remember when I first tried to lift 455 off my basement floor and the bar was glued to the floor.. lol.. and 500# wasn't even moving.

Trust me 500# is heavy. Will it get you an elite total? No, but you ask the average schmo to go pull 500lbs and they will be lucky to pull 300.

keep at it, and soon enough you'll be like the rest of the powerlifters .. you'll know when you find yourself saying stuff like "I trained light today.. didn't go over 405 for reps" lol

I have a similar story to you....Started deadlifting in January of 2012. Just pulled 540 w straps and 515 without. If you want to pull 500 then you need to set a goal and train for it. I don't think it's out of the question.

    Thumbs up

Thanks for all the replies. I kind of wanted to see where I stand as of now. I don't have interest in competing but it is fun to feed the ego every note and again!
