I received my first York Barbell Bar through Craigslist from a fellow forum member before the holidays. I have been meaning to load up some pictures and discuss the method of shipment on here that may help other members do business.
I was lurking on Craigslist Pro with a large search area when I happened to stumble upon a listing in the northeast for a Vintage York Barbell Bar. I emailed the seller with questions about the bar and to possibly discuss shipping. We got to talking on the phone when he asked me how I got into lifting and why I was curious about this particular item. When I told him I lurked and posted on this forum he told me his handle and we talked about the forums and he seemed interested into possibly shipping the bar.
It was around the Holidays by this time and he and I both have families so getting to the shipping took a little over a week. I had discussed possibly getting this bar with some coworkers that buy and sell fishing rods online and they suggested using PVC pipe to ship the bar. After discussing with the forum member this mode of shipping he went above and beyond to get the proper supplies to ship the bar. Money was sent via Paypal and Voila!!!!
My First York Barbell:
The shipping container was a 3-inch PVC pipe cut to proper length for the bar and sleeves with PVC caps rubber cemented and Gorilla Taped:
The sleeves of the bar were inverted and then the outside ring was replaced (the inner ring of the sleeve would not fit into the PVC) This also provided stability during shipping and I don't believe the bar could have moved
The bar was very straight and the inside of the sleeves had plenty of grease on them and the collars spun freely.
The bar had a little surface rust and a beautiful patina. I have lifted with it since before Christmas and it is now my favorite bar.
BIG thanks to the forum member who was able to get this bar into my hands. Again he went above and beyond.
This barbell has no York Stamp and has the small allan wrench screws. I believe it to be from the 70's or earlier.
Thanks guys

Nice looking bar. A lot of effort went into packing it, and it will clean up well.
It may not be the subject of your post, but I really like your U bar power rack too.My training log:

Nice.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

I also have a 70s bar and I'm curious how you took the sleeve off. I took the hex screw off the end cap but it doesn't want to budge. Is the shaft threaded on the end? Does it take some force to get the endcap to spin off? Also the flange has a short hex screw but there appears to be a threaded pin underneath it.
Also what shipper did you use? What was the cost?
Thanks!Last edited by morebarbell; 07-01-2013 at 05:59 AM.

The hex screw was removed with an Allen wrench. Once the screw was out the donut on the end was screwed off and then the sleeve slid off. The sleeve itself does not screw on. My bar does not have a hex screw or rolling pin through the flange though. That may need to be removed before taking the sleeve off.
Shipping was done by UPS and was around 28.00 with insurance. The seller (a well known board member from the "North") was able to get a piece of PVC pipe cut to fit the bar and then used the pipe caps secured with rubber cement and gorilla tape to ship the bar.[II]---[II] Equipment Crew #49 [II]---[II]

USPS will ship bars cheaply too.

Good to know. It looks like it would cost around $36 by parcel post, not including insurance. The online calculator for UPS rates varied a lot depending on location.
With bars that aren't as easily disassembled, it looks like 4" PVC would not cost more to ship... though the 4" pipe is more expensive... haven't seen 3.5" PVC locally.[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #32 []---[] ()---() York Barbell Club #43 ()---() ▉---▉ Equipment Crew #50 ▉---▉

After looking back at my emails with the seller shipping was around $40.
I believe he used the 3 inch PVC as the flange of the sleeves would not fit into the inside of the pipe. They were inverted and fit snugly up against the outside of the pipe. The seller cut the PVC to the perfect length so that the inverted flange was against the outer ring of the PVC and the donut ring was replaced to keep the flange from moving.[II]---[II] Equipment Crew #49 [II]---[II]

That's pretty much the perfect packaging. It worked out nicely with the York bar but I think it might be more complicated with an Ivanko bar or another bar that doesn't disassemble as easily... I've never tried taking one appart though.

I agree that another bar would be difficult to use the smaller diameter PVC. I would just try to measure the outside of the flange on an Ivanko bar and get a piece of PVC that would suit it. Then wrap the bar in bubble wrap.
