Hey all,
Today I couldn't go to the gym so I had to do my deadlifts here at home. I have a 300 lb olympic weight set but I wanted to do 320 lbs today. I put two 10 lb dumbells in a backpack and put that on while lifting the 300 lb bar set. Is this "close enough" to equivalent to 320 lbs? Probably not dead on and with only 20 lbs I'm sure it's no big deal but I'm curious what others think. By the way, I will be ordering more weights so hopefully I won't have to do this too much more.

I'm pretty sure you're all correct, however, it does make the deadlift harder so it is equivalent to something. Think about it this way: if the number were bigger and you put a 150 lb backpack on and then tried to deadlift 300 lbs, it's certainly not as easy as deadlifting 300 lbs with no backpack. So I know it's equivalent to something, just not sure how equivalent.

Yeah but there is no deadlift equivilent. You are deadlifting with essentially a weighted vest on. The closest thing I can think of is a Vogelpohl lift ( I believe that's what its called) where you deadlift against bands while simultaneously supporting a safety squat bar on your back. I can't even find a picture of it anymore so that might indicate how popular that type of lift is.

I dont really think this helped your deadlift at all. It may have made the exercise harder cause you had weights in a backpack strapped to you, but not equivalant to 320 lb deadlift. If i were you, i'd just rep out 300 (if thats not your max) and push for more reps to make up for the extra 20lbs of weight you dont have at home. Doing that would still be just as effective and building strength and making your deadlift stronger even though you cant do the poundage you would like to.
This would be more effective at making gains espically if your body isnt used to performing multiple reps over a certain number in pounds for deadlifts.

The weight on your back is going to be more akin to a squat, so you're basically adding 20 lbs of squat resistance to your 300 ld deadlift, which I would think would make your deadlift more difficult thus not allowing you to go quite maximal effort on the target muscles for the target ROM.
Honestly, it's 20 lbs, either attach it to be bb, wait until your new weight show up, or just add a couple reps to your working sets.
