I swear this is the #1 exercise I see people doing in my gym.
There are a few guys I see do these every day, and one day last week I looked around my gym and there were half a dozen people all doing side bends in different areas of them gym.
I don't even train abs, but if I did I don't think side bends would be a staple of my ab routine.
Do you do side bends?

I do side bends with a barbell over the shoulders and really concentrate on obliques with them, but I do them maybe once a month.
There is a certain group of guys at my gym who seem to carry 2 x 20kg(44lb) plates with them everywhere and do this daily."lmao you naive as **** son. Hope you followed the cardinal rule and didn't have your face in the dick pic, but based on the foolishness you've exhibited in your threads recently, you're probably like holding your dick with one hand and your social security card in the other and holding a piece of paper in your mouth with your name, address and phone number"

Why would I want big obliques? The thick waisted look isn't for me. Never, ever, never do them in any manner.
What blows my mind is all the ladies that do them... I've been known to ask some of them why they're doing them and then asking if they want a thicker waist.
There is one guy at the gym that I swear it's the only thing he trains. Every stinking time I see him he's doing some oblique movement.

This just proves that no matter HOW many times they hear it, or read it, or even SAY it to others, people STILL believe in spot reduction.
LOL. Me too.,
Yes. Although I disagree with giving unsolicited advice.

I would never do side bends, because my waist is thick enough, without deliberately adding mass to my obliques.
edit: Just noticed Roy said the same thing above. If you want better symmetry, don't develop your waist!★DSC★

I see plenty of people doing these because some asswipe PT told them to. Not as ignorant as the guy telling his GF to set a db on it's end on the padded seat of the seated row cable machine, then sit on the db while doing rows because a PT told him it's great for the core. Gyms are loaded with stupid fuks, I actually like going because some of them make me laugh.

Flex! How can you possibly get motivated in that environment? That guy kills my MOJO and I am not even working out!
I would have loved it if you walked up to him and garbed the weights out of his hand and said "thanks for holding these for my deads" and then put them on your BB.
It's like this guy in the background of this video. Watch what happens at 1:52

I don't do side bends (what chick wants a wide waist?) but I can see some merit in strengthening that area if you want to build a very strong core (for powerlifting, strongman...even pole dancing for that matter - some of those chicks have amazing core strength. No kidding). Doing side raises on a GHD or hyperextension bench would be more beneficial, though.

Uh, that would be a "NO!"
One of the most useless exercises ever. Plus, most of those who choose to do it, don't use full RoM (then again, you see a lot of that, with just about every exercise...) :/
I do work dem abs (talking about which is a bit like religion or politics, it seems!) but there's just no way I'd stoop that low. Bleh.

LMAO
Doesn't take much to piss me off, especially when I be lifting heavy.
But that wanker came around the corner and watched me set up my camera to record that DL attempt, then stood right in front of it. Not like it's a tiny gym or anything.
And almost every time I see that dude he is doing the same stupid **** with those 35s. No wonder he doesn't even look like he lifts!Insta: flexjs
