Hmmm...I think an idea relationship contains many things but I may have a different value. I am 33.

I think it should include a friendship (I know this is corny) and a lover. I don't like that marriage holds such value with people. My girl and I have a very good thing and at this point it is great; not sure anything is consider ideal or perfect. We both train so being up at 4 am is no problem. I cook all dinners, she cleans, I do car duties and she does laundry...it's equal and we respect each other. We make fun of each other and laugh together. It's perfect for me because she doesn't have expectations that I can't meet I and don't have stupid needs that she can't meet.

An ideal relationship at this point in my mind is one with a man who I am not "with" but have children with. Joint 50/50 custody, living apart. Yeah. I agree my ideal has changed. I have changed. As a 43 y.o. woman, the things I thought were important 20 years ago are no longer important to me.

With that said, the last man I was supposed to marry had a 4 y.o. and an 8 y.o. I planned on being a step mom. Read a bunch of books and talked to other people who were step parents.

The reason we broke up?
I couldn't STAND the way he parented his girls (they threw tantrums, bit other kids, stole, manipulated their dad b/c he felt guilty about breaking up the family even though he and his ex fought viciously).

We argued about their behavior constantly, and I realized that, ultimately, our differences in parenting would lead to marital strife and a certain divorce.

I think the ideal relationship is completely dependent up what one wants in life. My ideal relationship wouldn't be ideal for someone else. I look at life as the ultimate journey and your partner is your traveling companion for that journey. It's important that you both want to take the same kind of trip, that you can make each other laugh when things go wrong (because your luggage will get lost, flights will be delayed) and that you are willing to trudge through that transportation museum with a smile because he went to every art museum in prague with you.

As for my specific circumstances, I've been happily married for 24 years and we've made the choice not to have kids. When we were first together we really weren't even sure we would ever get married. We had the whole - we don't need a silly piece of paper thing going. Over time though, we decided that we were just making our lives harder and we honestly wanted to some public acknowledgement of our relationship (plus some nice tax breaks). On the kid front, we didn't immediately say no kids but both of us were upfront that neither of us were sure if we wanted them. So the prospect of no kids was never a deal breaker for either of us. As time went by, we realized that we really liked the life we'd built and neither of us really felt any overwhelming desire for kids. We talked about it and both agreed that if you are going to have kids you should both really want them and not feel the kind of ambivalence we were feeling.

So we had a general sense of what we wanted when we were younger but it also changed a little over time.
