It's very effective since you can alter the pace easily (for HIIT or fun purposes). It burns a lot in a really short time.
It can interfere with your shoulder/leg training if you overdid it.[Watdo?] - Want (''should'' for you naggers) bulk.

It burns a good amount of calories for time expended. The best cardio is that which you don't find boring - you're more likely to stick with it.
It's funny this thread should come up - I'm heading out to buy a rope today to use after my workout. I'm going to try to do 8 cycles of 30 second leisurely skipping and 30 second of top speed. I'll be pleased if I can make it through that.

Inefficient. You can 'jump rope' until you pound your knees into dust, but if your nutrition isn't disciplined, you'll stay as you are.
Use cardio to build/maintain your heart and lung health, something it's very efficient at. Use calorie control to alter your body composition.
This thread will explain all the steps to figure your baseline of required protein, fat, carbs, and calories:

As a former "boxer" (amateur) I can tell you that jumping rope is awesome. I HATE treadmills and jogging outside is only marginally more interesting to me. Jump rope is not only great for your heart but it is also really fun and develops your coordination. There are so many different tricks you can do with a jump rope that you can improve literally every day you skip (they call it skipping rope, not jumping rope). Modifying your patterns whenever you feel like it is also a plus. (normal jump, double jump, criss cross, one foot, high knee, jumping jacks, ski jumps, etc.)
I'm not sure if professionals in exercise consider it high intensity or not but to me it is. If you are not conditioned for skipping then your calves will feel it and if you use a weighted jump rope (I do) then your shoulders can get worked pretty well too. I am not saying you shouldn't do shoulder exercises because you jump rope, just saying you will feel the burn in that area if you do it long enough.
An example of my normal workout while skipping rope is:
3minutes on
30 second rest
3minutes on
30 second rest
4minutes on
30second rest
I do that about two-three times depending on how my foot (i have one flat foot) feels. Also something to consider is how often you do this a week. My body can only handle about 3 of these workouts a week. When your shirt is an entirely different color due to sweat I consider it a good workout.
***For fat loss, obviously nutrition is vital. When I was boxing regularly I was down to about 8percent body fat. Lot of jump rope. Lot of circuit training.***You give something up for everything you gain
