Towel Pull Ups and Joint Pain

I just tried doing towel pull ups for their benefits on grip and forearm development. I don't know if I wasn't clamping down hard enough on the towels but it felt like my fingers were trying to twist from the force. My finger joints feel like they're being stressed far too much and like the drawbacks outweigh the benefits of them.

Any tips on why this seems to be happening?

You're not used to it. Keep doing it and your hands will get accustomed. You have to grip very hard and invariably you will slip and cause your fingers to move into a different alignment. You could try some assisted towel pullups for now.

You're doing something your forearms aren't used to. Think of it like changing your squat stance from narrow to wide. You'd have to make the change slow to avoid injuring yourself, right?

Yep, it's just a matter of grip strength.

Well I also play guitar so I don't wanna screw up my finger joints and have bad problems with them when I'm older. My dad has joint problems and can't play anymore. I'll probably just stick to using my fat gripz to build forearms since it's more safe and doesn't torque my fingers.
