    The smith machine can be useful if you don't have anything else.
    Some bodybuilders will squat using it to try to isolate the quads similar to the hack squat machine before contest time.
    Be assured though most have put in the work with some form of BB squat before hand.

    Knees going beyond the toes you need to check out the olyimpic lifters in a deep squat position.
    They all go past the toes.Not saying its good or bad but they haven't changed their technique to save the knees.
    It's not always dangerous but one should be cautious.
