It had nothing to do with being better and everything to do with him being prepared to start. Last year there was a strike and basically no offseason, so this was Kaepernick's first preseason essentially. Most of the draft chatter on him said that he'd need 2-3 years of sitting and watching to be ready. Based on them giving Alex a one year deal, it seemed like the plan was to have Kaepernick start in 2013, however once he came into the Bears game and tore **** up, there was no going back for Harbaugh.
