This might sound crazy but if your shins and knees are in pain from running maybe stop running for a while?

Go use a treadmill and put the incline to 15.0 and walk at 3.5km/hr and interval it back and forth between 3.5km/hr and 5.0km/hr....for like 30-60 minutes. Probably burn more calories than you are jogging and it's light and easy on your joints (very low impact).

Agree, lay off the running for a while. You don't need cardio to lose weight but if you want to do some then do lower impact cardio (swimming or cycling).

If you have access to a gym there are some other exercises/machines that are aerobic but low/non impact. Most stair steppers are low impact...also, there are the cross country skiing type machines. Incline on a jogging machine will do it...also by taking larger steps than normal at the same speed, but you will run the risk of other kinds of pain if you are not careful.

I agree with others that you should take a break. However, what kind of shoes do you run in and are they new or do they have some miles on 'em? Shoes make a HUGE difference, especially if you're currently running in an old pair of cross trainers that squeek when you walk.

you gotta work up to running slowly.

First wait untill your stress injuries heal completely. Then start off running only a few days a week. Gradually increase this, if you start getting stress related injuries your running too much. Losing weight will help as well.

BUY NEW SHOES~! I had the same thing, and was in chronic pain, and would get swollen calves, knee, feet problems, etc. I bought a nice pair of light New Balance running shoes and I could almost have cried - no more pain when running.

Also, use a treadmill. It makes a huge difference in the amount of impact your body absorbs.

    Good luck! =)

Your joints/tendons/bones aren't meant to carry extra weight. I agree with the inclined treadmill walking. If you absolutely want to run, then run less often to let your body heal between runs.
