should it be legal to own fully automatic weapons in the US?

just hear me out. im very pro-2nd amendment. own a few rifles myself. but where do we draw the line? this is the one argument that seems arbitrary and hard to solve. if we "need" ar-15's because they're more efficient in both fighting oppression and self-defense (which i agree with), why don't we "need" fully automatic weapons?

again im very pro-gun rights and don't want this ridiculous "assault weapons" ban (that has a lot to do with cosmetics) to be forced on us. but this argument is more to have an open discussion on finding out which weapons are too great for average americans to own, and which weapons aren't adequate for us to fulfill our 2nd amendment rights.

    anyone?

You can own them in many states if you have the part manufactured pre-ban and all of the neccessary paperwork. The federal government doesnt get to determine what we "can" have. Regardless of what Obama believes.

I am very pro gun but I do not feel as if the American public should have access to fully automatic weapons. Why? Mass casualties should not be a priority. Hunters should not mow down animals (I am a hunter) and you can defend yourself just fine with a semi auto weapon. I just see no point

the whole point of this thread isn't for me to suggest that fully automatic weapons should be legal to buy. I don't think they should be. but the point here is that there HAS to be a cutoff point as to which weapons are excessive and unnecessary. I like to see which stance different people have. the pro-gun control people might say semi automatic rifles like the ar-15 are the cutoff point where they draw the line and say it's too powerful, while the pro-gun people would say that semi-auto ar-15's are NOT excessive, but that fully automatic weapons are.

It is legal to own a fully automatic weapon. You just have to go through a bunch of red tape to do it.
The following is from a forum post at thefiringline.

Step 1-You must find a dealer with a Class III FFL as they're the only ones who may deal in NFA weapons (machine guns, silencers, etc.) and select a weapon that was registered in the NFA registry before 1986 (this only applies for full-auto, silencers and AOW can be brand new)

Step 2-You must make your application to both the federal gov't and your local chief law enforcement officer, both must approve.

Step 3-Pay the $200 tax stamp

Step 4-Take posession of your weapon.

The largest impediment is that the NFA registry was closed to full-auto in 1986, therefore only LEOs or Class III FFL's may legally posess a post-86 full auto. Because of this, the price of pre-86 full-autos is very high (typically $10K and up).

Fully Automatic firearms are not banned nor illegal to own in the Us. It is just hard to acquire them.

    You are incorrect.

At your original statement; contrary to your belief, fully automatic fire is really only used for suppressive fire.

For the record, AR15's aren't fully automatic and fully automatic weapons are legal to own, just very hard to acquire legally (special license etc)

I like to see which stance different people have. the pro-gun control people might say semi automatic rifles like the ar-15 are the cutoff point where they draw the line and say it's too powerful, while the pro-gun people would say that semi-auto ar-15's are NOT excessive, but that fully automatic weapons are.
To me personally, full autos should be completely legal, albeit more regulated ( mandatory safe laws + all other NFA rules) than semi-autos. My reasoning is, while full auto can be effective, in untrained hands, it leaves too much room for colateral damage. I do want the Hughes Amendment to be repealed though.

again im very pro-gun rights and don't want this ridiculous "assault weapons" ban (that has a lot to do with cosmetics) to be forced on us. but this argument is more to have an open discussion on finding out which weapons are too great for average americans to own, and which weapons aren't adequate for us to fulfill our 2nd amendment rights.

Individual infantrymen aren't given fully automatic weapons, therefore, they shouldn't be legal. But what about the M249 SAW, you ask? SAW is the abbreviation for Squad Automatic Weapon. That it's fired by an individual is irrelevant, it's given out at a squad level. If a semi-auto member of the AR-15 family is good enough for a SEAL, it's good enough for you.

if so fcuking tired of this retarded argument.

You seem to think a revolution would be "the people" vs. "the military" and that is simply not true. The United states military is made up of "the people" who are in positions to defend "the people" I highly doubt the majority of soldiers would fire upon the people they took an oath to protect. They also arent going to drop "nukes" either. The real reason to prevent citizens from owning weapons is to prevent dissension, they dont want people to storm wall street with their AR's when they realize wtf is actually going on ("federal bank" actually privately owned, debt based fiat currency, increased taxes, corporate fascism etc etc..)

what difference does it make if it's fully-auto? you can still shoot pretty fast without it. most of the gun crap is coming up after the shooting in Newtown. I don't remember if the shooter used a fully auto weapon or not, but it wouldn't have made much of a difference. yea, the shootings suck, but i'd rather cope with those than ban guns though. I think the deterrent of never being invaded and potentially overthrowing a bad government is worth more than a few deaths per year, as cold as that sounds. we should just continue improving ways of tracking illegal weapons and increase gun crime punishments.

yea it sounds farfetched, but honestly look at all of the conflicts going on around the world, especially in Africa. crime lords rule areas because they have all the guns. **** like that wouldn't happen in America because so many private citizens own guns. don't take for granted the political landscape because the unknown can always happen. I'm reading a series of books right now where nuclear bombs destroyed a bunch of the major cities in the US and it completely ****ed the government over. very interesting how the author described the political situation afterwards. same **** could happen except with a natural disaster. think of how crazy looting always occurs after **** like that.

First, you're right, it has happened countless times. However, the difference between the US and other examples is that "the military" is not exclusively the realm of the Federal government. Each individual state has it's own military (National Guard). Texas probably has one of the world's top ten militaries inside of state lines, including it's own air force. The point, as demonstrated in Syria, where infantry armed with rifles are taking on tanks, artillery, and aircraft, is that unless the state expends no effort whatsoever on protecting infrastructure and buildings, or differentiating civilians from the resistance, a large force of troops armed with rifles can be very effective.
