Our government does not have enough military support to become tyrannical. Also this tyranny would have to be enacted by legislation or the entire government would have to change overnight in to a new form like a dictatorship. Modern governments with free press and citizens who have access to social media couldn't just do this without there being all sorts of fuarking signs.

Why would you presume to know what they would or wouldn't do given you don't even know who the "leader" would be? Dropping a nuke would start mass panic which could be considered a reasonable strategy. And if the "leader" was as nuts as Hitler or Stalin then why not.
