First post here....but I would also agree to add the full cage. That along with a good pull-up bar and plenty of Olympic weights have always been my most used tools over the years.

There is a company in Australia called iron edge, I have just bought there matrix cage! It's so heavy duty, pull ups, bench, rings, climbing rope, squats! It's so versatile, you can add the bands too for any lat work or cable work and saves you having heaps of heavy bulky equipment.

I think OP was looking for what HE should put in his home gym, not what YOU would put in a home gym.
Why the pchuk do you troll this section so hard.

Based on the items you've listed the only ones I would personally buy would be the rack and elliptical/treadmill/bike and even the cardio machine I would just scan Craigslist until an absolutely great deal presented itself (it took me about a year to find a treadmill and elliptical).
The leg station (assuming you mean like a leg press/hack squat?) may take up too much room and there are a ton of exercises you do without the machine. That said if you have the money, room and plates by all means invest but I would put it 3rd on the list if I were buying. Cable station is the same as the leg station.
ID listed a good bench I you can afford it. My advice with a bench (which I learned the hard way) is to try it before you buy testing it as you would when working out. Only after buying my FID bench did I realize that when inclined was it very awkward.

*YOU* think ( first, LOL LOL LOL NO ).. *YOU THINK*! You are not in charge here.
The title of the OP's message is "What would you put in a new home gym". My post was intended to give ideas of things he hadn't thought about. There's nothing wrong with that ( unless you're a jealous person like yourself ).
You're a sorry excuse for a human being given that you feel the need to neg me for my post. You're obviously a very closed minded person, I feel sorry for you and others here that feel like you do. You're a sad excuse for human existence. Go crawl back into your private little whole where you can only be exposed to things that you agree with.

There is when you are off-topic in just about every goddam thread. The site has a sub-forum for people to talk about strongman. You spout strong man **** in every bloody thread here and IMHO it's ****ing ridiculous.
I bet OP never thought about a trampoline or a pummel horse or eneven bars either, but if a gymnast constantly trolled this section with ridiculous comments specifically related to his non-bodybuilding training routine, I doubt the regular members would be super happy about it.
I'm really not sure why you get away with it.
And for that matter I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be jealous of, either.
And also, I did read OP's post and not just the title of the thread.
This was his question:

1) either a full squat cage or a combo squat/bench station with the stick-out style adjustable safeties. truthfully i would prefer the former (full cage) but space is plentiful but not unlimited.
2) elliptical machine or stationary bike. have to get the cardio in. in my experience running is the best, but this is Seattle we're talking about here where it rains continuously 10 months a year.
3) maybe some sort of leg station for some isolation exercises.
4) maybe some sort of cable station. Any recommendations on something that won't take up 400 sq feet?
I didn't see any strongman **** on his list....
Now excuse me while I crawl back into my "whole". LMAO.

vast and vaguely octopoid
I would definitely get the power cage first. If your space is that limited you could consider letting your pull-up/dip tower go (even though it's a nice one)...a power cage with a couple of accessories can do that in the same footprint just about plus it's just more versitile.
If you don't have one already it's worth stopping by a play-it-again-sports or looking on craigslist for a used weight tree. They're pretty inexpensive, and it's great for space as well as opposed to just lining the plates up against the wall or having them lay around.

I have had a home gym for several years and in my opinion must haves are
1. Power rack w/adjustable bench.
2. Olympic weights w/a variety of bars.
3. Dip and pull up bars.
Everything beyond this is gravy.
I regret buying hex dumbbells/rack. They aren't used often and take up a lot of room. I should have bought the adjustable dumbbells.
Many power racks have a pull up bar on them. I had dip bars made by a local metal worker. They fit between the safety pins in my rack and didn't cost much.

Sounds like someone is a little jealous that they don't have a microwave for their tacky in the gym.
