    God I Miss Mexico

Being from South Texas, I guess you could say Mexico was part of my life. I remember as a kid, going there with my grandfather and father buying cattle. I remember my youth, going to the bars where ladies would frequent and having a good time. As I got older, I remember doing business in the farming and catlle industry. The people there, were some of the friendliest I knew, and would insist on me staying in their homes. I miss the food they cooked for me, the spirits we drank and the total cameradrie. Sadly, those days are gone, and the bad that Mexico has inherited is even threatining our lives here, especially in the rural areas. I still hold hope that one day, things will go back to the way they used to be.Siempre se perderá México

Brother, I've been in homes with no electricity, fresh made tortillas with nothing more than 'frijoles' and some scrambled eggs, eaten with that tortilla. There was no 'flatware.' The most delicious food I've ever eaten in my life! I've sat in a parking lot, car doors open, listening to "Juanga" blaring on the radio and drinking beer from a cooler out of the trunk of the car. I've sat in beautiful homes off of the Avenida Insurgentes, or Coyoacan, Mexico, D.F. and drank high dollar alcohol served on a silver platter in cut glass crystal.

Como Mexico, no hay dos! I could sometimes just sit and cry thinking, remembering. You ever experience it...you're left with a hole in your soul. Mexico is a temptress. If you've never seen the heart of that sprawling, mixed up, pathetic mass, you've never seen or experienced anything! It is a jewel. One of the most beautiful, moving, rich, filling places you could ever know or experience.

So true paolo. I have experienced just about all the things you have mentioned. Sometimes you mingled with the rich and other times with peasants. To tell you the truth, I don't know the difference between drinking Mezcal from a clay bowl, or drinking Porfidio tequila from a crystal glass. I also miss the wonderful dove hunts over the years. So sad that the times have changed.

I will one day go back brother! Mexico City, after those rain showers daily between 4 and 6 in the afternoons, certain times of the year. Clears the smog right out of the sky! LOL Little cafes, book stores, coffee right on the street in sidewalk cafes, or a beer or two first thing in the morning when you've had too much to drink the night before in Garibaldi Square! Tenampa can get under your skin. Mariachis and tequila! Mexico is glorious!!!! This little 'bolillo' was born out of country and out of time.

My dream was to visit my cousins in Ciudad Mante. My grandfathers brother moved over there in the 1940's, and they have a nice farming/ranching operation. I should have gone when I had the chance. This little bolillo ws also born out of time. .

If you are flying from the States into a resort town such as Cancun, Ixtapa, etc then it's perfectly safe. I sure as hell wouldn't drive across the border any longer and attempt to go visit areas that aren't tourist spots.

The country around Mante is really pretty. South of Monterrey, heading towards Saltillo is gorgeous as well. Mexico has some beautiful country. Crossing the mountains out of Mexico City heading towards Cuernavaca. One wouldn't think perhaps, Mexico and pine trees! Rich forest. I think that the country will eventually 'settle down' a bit. I certainly hope so. I've driven all over Mexico in years past, stopped in roadside checks by the hundreds, uniformed Mexican soldiers opening the trunk of your car, asking you questions... and never once did I ever feel uncomfortable or threatened in the least.

I wouldn't do that today, unfortunately...but I'm hoping and praying that sometime, before I'm too old to drive all over the country, that I'll be able to do it again!

Ok back on topic, I love the scenery of the pacific side of mexico. Have only been to Ixtapa/Zihua there but my wife and I both thought it was prettier than the gulf side. However we much prefer Playa and Cozumel over the west side just for the variety of activities and the 1,000,000 times better snorkeling.

On topic. The last time I was in Mexico was in '69. Because of the same reasons listed by so-tex, that was the last time. Very sad, indeed. Beautiful people, scenery and food.

It's changed just a wee bit since then. Hell 1st time wife and I went we spent a week on Cozumel and traveled to the mainland and that was in 96, Playa Del Carmen was still an actual fishing village with not many tourists and the main rd was dirt. When we went back last yr we were shocked at how much it had changed, only thing we recognized was the ferry pier. Cozumel hasn't changed much except for a Mega store and the new cruise ship pier as well as few new resorts and we were happy to see that.

Wow. I have heard that if anyone insists on going there, that they remain in the resort and not to venture out.

What??? No way is that the truth, in Ixtapa we took the same buses the locals used to travel about 30 miles south to Barra De Potosi and never once did we fear anything. In Playa we used the colectivos which are minivans the locals use as taxis to get around, a lot of tourists won't use them but I am fine with them. Took those to get to Tulum and then to Akumal to swim with the turtles.

I like Mexico, my kind of place. I was in Cancun in 2010 during that flu (or whatever..) outbreak and the drug cartel battles were going on at the same time. Prior to that I've been to Acapulco and Mexico City. My BIL is from there and he and my SIL have an apartment there, so we have a place to stay. Mexicans love beer and NFL football... 'nuff said. The food is always good and there's always something to do.

2001 I was walking back to Cancun from a town down by Playa and one of those guys asked me to hop in. Glad he did, it was cheap and I never would have been able to walk that! I'm not so sure I'd hop in a van with a stranger down there today, not now.

I've been down there 3 times and something always calls me back. Love Mexico! Dam good eats, clean beaches and clean water. I would never go back to Cancun though, to touristy for me. I found a little spot not many people know about yet, I might try that next winter.

I have never even ventured into Cancun, either take a bus from the airport down to Playa or a small plane to Cozumel. 1st time we went there spent a week on Coz and pretty much the rest of the people on the plane stayed in cancun...it was an Apple vacations charter filght. On the way back us and the 2 other couples who stayed on Coz were uber relaxed and rested on the plane whereas the folks who were in Cancun all looked like they had their asses kicked.

My wife and I along with her sister and a few friends and stayed at our friend's winery and bed and breakfast right out side of Ensenda this past New Years. Driving through TJ was a little nerve racking but once we got through TJ, the rest of the drive was beautiful.

I've never been to Baja California. I have good friends from Mexico City who regularly spend Christmas in La Paz. That area of Mexico is absolutely beautiful; stark, barren. One incredible contrast rolling down to the the Sea of Cortez!

I went on my honeymoon and was there when 9/11 happened and went back to fish Lake Guerrero a few years ago. Would love to go back but don't see it happening any time soon.

My dad and I fished Lake Guerrero when I was a kid. Great bass fishing for sure.

My wife and I just got back from Cancun...well, Maroma Beach (just south of Cancun and north of Playa del Carmen). Fabulous place. Celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary, my 40th B-Day and my BIL's wedding.

    iPhone panarama shot.

You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.
