You're looking at it from the wrong perspective. It is impossible to answer a question that general. Some girls DO like skinny guys. I know grown women who don't like a lot of muscles who find skinny hippy dudes and beards super hot.
It's not about asking an impossible question like what would women rather as if they all have a collective brain that likes the same thing (by the way, asking women on BODYBUILDING.com is called biased sampling, of course everyone here is going to say muscles)...it's about asking two questions: a) what kind of woman are YOU looking for and b) is it worth it to change where you want to be physically to be with that sort of woman.
Example: I find fit, girly, fashionista types very attractive. Typically, those types like their men to be well groomed, know how to dress and also be reasonably fit. Fits perfect.
But let's say I met a specific girl and bu looking at her past boyfriends and what celebrities she find hot I figure that she loves big muscle bound dudes. Do I want to be muscle bound? Do I try and get her attention as is?
What if she was into skinny guys who dress like New Boyz? Do I lose tons of weight and buy skinny jeans??
My suggestion: find out where YOU want to be and you'll see what women are available to you at that point (on top of the awesome realization that women *generally* are not as locked into a "type" as men are)

Work out and lift for yourself man! Although most girls like muscle, you'll feel much better physically and mentally so try it out. If you don't like it then you can lose the muscle just as well. Not hard to do.

Just remember that being the biggest, strongest or most cut guy in the gym isn't going to get you laid. Use bodybuilding to supplement your life, not take it over. Most women tend to be attracted to a nice, muscular chest, defined abs, etc. That's well within your reach. Don't worry about getting 'too big'. It's akin to worrying about reading too much and getting 'too smart'.
Make sure you live an active, well rounded life. Get an education. Have opinions on things, be confident in yourself (lifting will help a lot) and get out there and socialize with a lot of people. That will get you into opportunities where your confidence, humor and yes, physical attributes will help you meet women.
