You crack me up, man, you remind of my little brother. Your mom is awesome for saying that, seriously amused right now. If I ever go and visit my friend in Australia, I'm challenging you to a race.
Are all the sick people up in here feeling better?? muruku, wgoodman? I finally am, about to head out on my first 10-miler in over a year since I broke my femur. WISH ME LUCK.
also gj zzfh, be careful out there, not every run is a race and you'll definitely be faster when it isn't the day after squatting."The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously."

Not trying to bash you socal runners but how do you all do it? I'm down at Disneyland and went out this morning for a run and about gagged on the smog, felt winded after about one mile. Just felt awful. Do you all just run on a treadmills or something?

I live on the beach so I get a nice fresh breeze every day
But when I'm at my Dads house more inland there is definitely a bit of smog or whatever. Never really noticed it having an effect on running, but I grew up there so I guess I'm just used to it. Come to think of it my times/cardio has been a lot better since I moved to the middle of no where. We shall see how it goes when I move back lol"If in my say 80 years on earth I do more help than damage, then I feel complete."

....
Just out of curiosity here does anyone run with a breathing restrictor? I'm at sea level and have a half marathon up in lake Tahoe which us like 7000 feet, I figure that would wipe me out. But could also help.... Or would be smarter to do my normal cardio but do more of low intensity like an stair climber with one.,.... Ugh typing on a tablet ftl

@muruku, wow, that route looks so pretty. I think it could get even someone like me to stop and smell the roses (or whatever those plants are).
and my 10-miler, yeah, it did! I posted it in my log, but yeah, I just took it nice and easy and didn't even breathe hard through the whole thing, it was amazing. Legs even felt strong throughout, even on hills... I'm so used to running through injury and illness that it's kind of amazing to find that I'm actually semi-fit. Worked down from an 8:40 first mile to an 8:16 last mile without effort, which is a good sign."The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously."

Good luck! You can certainly push faster when it is an actual race, but the first mile still shouldn't feel super hard; you should go out at a pace that feels tough but sustainable, and start to hear your breathing in mile 2. Then mile 3 will be a death march (pun intended) but hang onto pace and sprint out the last 200m if you can.
For a zombie race specifically, though, I think you just have to avoid the zombies. If they bite you, you may be reduced to brainless shuffling. Zombies: not renowned for their speed, though they have great stamina. Maybe they should do Zombie Ultras."The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously."
