My first contest prep is January 26th. I have a full meal plan from my coach. Cardio every am on an empty stomach and HIIT once a week. Possibly 2 depending on how fast I lean out. Is it possible to become lean enough w/just diet & cardio & lifting without a fat burner? Do most competitors use one?

Not quite sure why cardio should be done on an empty stomach.
Training + Diet and cardio should suffice just fine.

Sounds like a lot of cardio at the outset. Disagree with the fasted aspect as well. If you don't understand WHY your coach is having you do something, or you read an article that tells you to do the opposite of what he did, ASK HIM. Don't ever forget that you're paying him. He works for you and should be able to explain pretty much everything he has you do during your diet.
As far as so-called "fat burners", they're good for energy and maybe getting the last tin bit of fat off. You don't want to unleash every weapon in your arsenal right away. Stick with the diet and cardio for a while and add a fat burner later when your energy starts to tank.

You hired a coach, listen to your coach and ask them questions. If your coach does not have answers for why he/she does or doesn't do things then perhaps he/she doesn't know.
Personally i don't rely on fat burners for anything other than some energy and appetite suppression. There may be some benefit in helping liberate some fat which can be burned as fuel but diet and cardio are going to dictate fat loss for the most part.Contest Prep Coach

Fat burners are not necessary, this is where you play it smart and give yourself enough time to diet down.
Unless you are taking "something special", over the counter fat burners are crap. I only used them the last few weeks of prep to keep me awake and a little less lethargic . An I drank a pot of coffee to boot.Coming out of "retirement"...Meg is training for a Figure competition...again!!!
