These threads make me laugh a bit. Basic isnt this place where you have any say what happens to you. YOu are up and on the go constantly. You run everywhere. It might not be maximum effort all the time but it is all day everyday. You will learn in the first hour that you are not going to have time to be thinking how many cals is this and oh i better not eat these carbs i need to cut. YOU WILL BE EATING ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET YOU HANDS ON BY DAY 2!!! I went in 155 pounds shredded and came out 147. I ate everything in front of me and some of my battle buddies food. You get five mins to eat your food. YOu really think your gunna take the time to pick and choose only healthy stuff. YOu get served what they have that day. Usually its awful with no taste and not healthy.

The thing
I lost quite a bit of weight in basic, fat and muscle. We got three meals a day but it wasn't a lot of food for each meal. I bounced back pretty quick though.
I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph. - Theodore Roosevelt

The difference in basic training is all over the place depending on where you go and what branch you are in. Being in the Marines we are known for having a harder boot camp and you are basically guaranteed to lose weight. You are always on the move, lots of different types of PT but not much lifting, even if you're not PTing and just sitting around cleaning weapons you'll get sent to the quarterdeck to PT more just for fun, also brb better eat fast because you get no time to eat. When I was in Ft. Leonard wood for my MOS school I saw the Army guys doing their basic and it was a complete joke. They even got weekends off to go to the PX eat a bunch of junk food, had access to their cell phones, fat bodies everywhere, annoyed the crap out of me after having gone through what I went through. Not to knock the Army or anything, if you're in infantry or perhaps at certain other bases or something I hear it's more strict.

I lost 25lbs in Basic. Lost strength and a lot of muscle mass.
Eat everything you can. We did PT 6 days a week ranging from 2-5 miles runs, sprints, etc. You'll be rucking a lot as well, which is easy really, depending on how far you're going and the weight of your ruck.
You will lose weight. You will eat everything you can. You will sleep as often as you get a chance. Period. That's just how it goes.

Well I did Navy, which I would guess is probably less physical strenuous than Army Boot Camp. The PT was a joke, and I missed a lot of it because I was on "Ship Staff"- For some reason I still ended up losing a lot of weight there, my guess would be that it was mainly due to me not having access to alcohol.

Army/Navy/Air Force bootcamp PT is basically a joke with Marines a step or two ahead. Just be able to run around an 8:00 mile and you're set.
USMC Officer Candidates School........quite the opposite. But we're fuked with a little less than boots
