military brahs gtfih! question about basic training.
Im about 17-18 percent bodyfat and am joining the army soon. I plan on cutting while in basic because I will lose weight from all the cardio so I figured I might as well get shredded doing it. Did you guys lose lots of fat during basic? I plan on just eating a lot of meat/veggies and keeping the carbs moderate. Not going to count cals due to all the cardio I will be doing during the day.

This. Eat everything you can. You will lose tons of weight from what I hear.
I too will be going to basic within the next 6 months and am actually hoping to put on weight before I go. At about 200lbs right now.

You do as they say while they are there. They will give you what you need to survive. I know people who have come out and didn't look different and i know people who look way better. My friend had weights in his barracks apparently. Are you infantry or not? That can also play a role because they do things a little different

starting my application soon. I don't know about US army but I read for Canadian you get three meals a day. I'm going to lose size/strength anyways so I figured I might as well just go big and get shredded while i'm there. Im just bulking as hard as possible leading up until I leave.

I don't really lift
you will lose weight but don't expect to come out as ripped or in some sort of ridiculous good shape. Boot camp/basic training/whatever you want to call it is no where near as physical as you think. You'll just be burning far more calories than you can take in.
I do it because I can, I can because I want to, I want to because you said I couldn't

PT everyday, the PT is a joke though. The rest is just being taught in the field and chit. That's what I have heard.

Whole lotta this.
But go ahead and tell your Drill Instructor you would like a lean steak or some chicken with broccoli and maybe some diced baked red potatoes.
Edit - just saw Canadian forces. You may get that meal after all.

Truth.
You will be more concerned about just getting food or WARM food then about counting your macros!

ok phaggot relax. I didn't mean it like that. I thought the standard army meal would just be some type of meat and vegetables?

Good luck at BCT (though you probably won't need it).
I don't recommend cutting while you're there, when I was going through BCT I felt hungry almost 24/7 for the first few weeks and saw a few people pass out from not eating properly.

I can't say for sure when it comes to Army basic but in Marine Corps boot camp you are always doing something "physical". But PT or anything that I would deem as any sort of workout is only done about 4 days out of the week. You are constantly moving around, marching everywhere, doing drill, and everything you do is done with a sense of urgency(moving quickly) from 6am-9pm with no rest time/down time(except for sitting in classes, but you're not exactly "relaxing"). This burns more calories than most would think.

If anything you will most likely gain a fair bit of weight.. The food they feed you is nearly entirely carbs... and the drinks are mainly sugary sports drinks, there are options but you gotta watch what you eat.. PT is pathetic.. Thier hardest PT will be like a warmup stretch for the average lifter

Might weight stayed pretty consistent through bootcamp. Eat as much as you can though because you burn a lot of calories there. Add to that some meals are chit and you eat less. Always drank milk at chows because every five minutes you're chugging a canteen of water anyways.
Have fun.

You will eat your food in silence. You will not look anywhere but your plate. And if you're lucky you will have enough time to finish your meal. Srs.
Don't worry about food or cutting or any of that non-sense. Just focus on doing what your told to do at that very moment.

I guess you have no opportunity to lift during basic? How much strength did you lose during basic?

for some guys yes
opportunity to lift?....NO. Even if there was a gym available to you, which there is not, it is not like you have down time in the training schedule to go lift weights when you want. Closest thing you'll get to lifting weights is whatever measly weights your drill instructor has for you to use when you do have a few minutes of free time or the weights you might lift during a circuit course.

Basically for us it was pushups pull ups runs and abs with other little things in between. At the end of the day you just want to unwind and get as much sleep as you can. Morning comes fast. I lost strength in certain areas but overall strength and cardio I came out better.

so would you recommend I eat to lose fat or eat as much as possible to preserve muscle/strength while in basic?

Lift? I think you have the wrong impression on what the military does in basic training.

you'll lose some weight if you don't eat like a fatass, I lost about 10lbs in AF BMT.
USAF - Fly, fight, win.
321st TRS - Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

You'll want to eat as much as you can. It's not a luxury. Food is fuel and you will need all the fuel you can get (not a whole lot). Food is comparable to school lunches

My friend had time to lift at Army Basic for Infantry. They had DB's and a bench. Couldn't believe it when he told me. His bench actually went up
