That sucks man (the bad coaching thing), I can definitely see how that would make it not very fun. (I can't really say I know what you mean though, all of my coaches are amazing.)
But all I can say to you, is go do it! It's a great place to make some friends, have some fun, and there's a pretty high chance you can get good scholarships.

lol, I was sortof overweight when I started running (7th grade), but white-boy fast, so I ran 100, 4x1, 4x4, but then my coach put me in the 800 and I did pretty well, then 8th I rocked the 4x4, 800, and 1600....dat feel...
My favorite event is the 1600/mile I'd have to say, however I've had the most success in the 800 (4x8 more specifically).
