Exclamation TELL ME how much I should be CLEAN & PRESSING

Okay quick question that some expert can hopefully answer:

    Age: 20 yrs
    Weight: 68kg

    Squat: 132.5 (at 5 reps)
    Bench: 97.5 (at 5 reps)
    Dead: 130 (at 5 reps)

For some reason I don't actually know the proper name for it as I just call it 'Press' but basically I do a 'Clean & Press' getting the barbell of the ground, and then I do a 'Military Press' lifting it above my head - I try to do 5 reps of these.

    Press: 52.5kg (at 3 reps), 50kg (at 5 reps)

^ I'm starting to wonder if that's actually any good or not. Some big guy in the gym said it was a decent amount though I look pretty weedy so that could be the reason.

Another guy said you should be doing 80% of what you bench - which of course 52 is nowhere near.

I do enjoy doing them but I don't put as much effort into them as the main three. I do them once a week.

I'm just wondering whether I should be doing say 70kg (considering my other stats) or is 50kg a fair figure?

Perhaps I should start concentrating on them a little more.

Thanks in advance to any replies.

Yes, your OHP should be a little higher. But honestly if you are going to try to start pushing them hard, take the bar out of the rack already in pressing position. Its hard to get really tight and press your max weight if you have to clean it up first. I can press 145 lbs but I know I can't clean and press anywhere near that, at least 20 lbs lower.

Well, since people can usually clean more than they can strict press, I'd assume your max strict press would equal your max clean & press.

If you push press, that number can go up by quite a bit. If you jerk, it goes up even more.

The clean and press is a very technical movement (except if you´re doing a bastardized version of it known as the reverse curl and press) and hence one´s strength when just starting out isn´t necessarily going to be the limiting factor and as such I can´t really say how much you "should" be pressing.

Second, you say you do sets of five but for a highly technical and demanding exercise (just think of the ROM: from the floor to overhead) that is too much. I´d say 3 reps per set tops.

Thid: how come your 5RM squat and deadlift are virtually the same? I have a hard time believing that unless your squats are really high. If you´re interested in the Olympic lifts then you have to squat full depth.

Plus the Olympic press (as used in the lift clean and press in the days when it was still a part of the competition) is slightly different than a normal military press. In case you´re interested, here´s a video: http://startingstrength.com/index.ph...th_tommy_suggs

But above all: why is it so important to you to be doing a "decent" amount? That is going to be individual for everyone.
    Strength + Speed = Power

If you never fail, you aren't truly pushing yourself to the limit. If you never push yourself to the limit, how do you know what you're truly capable of?

In my experience, people who never press tend to be able to do only about 40% of their bench press if they try pressing, and people who never bench but do lots of pressing tend to be up around that 80% mark. Most people who do both lifts at a fairly even dosage will fall somewhere between those extremes.
