Are your traps developed to the point that you want? Then no, not really.

Do you want bigger traps? Then yes.
Are they lagging behind? Then yes.

    No exercise is ever necessary.

If your question is should you include direct trap work (shrugs, hang cleans, etc etc), for most people with square shoulders you should do them and do them more than once a week. For people with round shoulders the delt and back work will probably be enough.

JOJ doesent do them *anymore*. He still does indirect work such as deads(he is a powerlifter after all). His traps already dominate his shoulders IMO anyways so they dont realy need any more size.

You can substitute it with other exercises, but I feel that they are important.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

in my professional opinion shrugs are necessary for people that want to do shrugs.

They are necessary for me. My traps have always been a weak part of my physique. And I want balance before I want mass.

BTW, I've tried doing Hang Cleans, but they seem to be kinda hard on my joints. Any good alternatives?

Yes , but mix them up with upright rows to keep the muscles guessing. I prefer shrugs myself but each to their own.

Not necessary. No exercise is mandatory. It really depends on your goals. If you are looking for further hypertrophy of the upper traps, then it is a nice addition to your program.

Necessary for what, and for whom?

I do them but don't put a whole lot of emphasis on them. I throw them in on top of my trap bar deads.

I feel it is an excellent exercise because not only does it hit the target muscle efficiently but it works on many other secondary muscles good too. It can be used in many different variations as well depending upon what works best for you. I use pronated grip barbell shrugs and alternated grip barbell shrugs. It gives my whole body a nice pump which is cool too.

I used to do them but i stopped last year, they are not essential in my book, but if that is a hard growth area for you then you should do them.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. Unless you are struggling in that area I see no need. I did heavy bb shrugs front and back for awhile and pretty much noticed nothing.

My routine has upright rows, deadlifts and heaps of powercleaning so they get worked out pretty well.
