    Energy shots?

Are the energy shots such as 5-hour energy or verve completely unhealthy? would it be bad if I took one before a sport? What would you compare them to, like a can of soda or cup of coffee? what are your overall thoughts on these shot drinks?

Comparable to a strong cup of coffee, they are fine to take if you want/need the energy; caffeine pills are a cheaper option though.

I consider them a waste of money, because if I'm going to pay $2 to consume caffeine, I at least want to be able to sip on a halfway decent tasting drink. No, they are not healthy. And they're addictive. I'd rather drink black coffee or a diet rockstar if having very low calories is important to you.
