I work with a guy who is doing this. He's like 30 or 31 and engaged to the girl, but she has a 7 year old kid from a previous relationship. I would usually say this is a bad idea, but he's a really good dude and loves the kid, so I see no problem with it. Guess it just depends on the situation

My wife and I didn't have any luck having children of our own so I'm helping to raise a little girl that isn't mine. The dad ran off when he found out that the mother was pregnant with her. The mother is just a friend of ours, but when I met this little girl, i made a promise to myself and to this little girl that I will step in and be the dad/father figure that she didn't get the chance to have. She has her own room at my house, my wife & I keep her as much as possible, take her on trips and I take care of all of her necessities : clothes, school, Christmases, Birthdays, etc.... She is the love of my life and I would do anything for her, so if someone wants to call that beta....so be it!

Your situation is different though, its more like an adoption case which is a commendable act. This would be taking someone elses baggage while agreeing to a long term relationship. You couldn't have kids so you are doing the morally right thing in saving someones life, very different.

I have a half brother. My dad met my mom when he was young. My mom had already been married and divorced (he basically didn't want anything to do with my mom or my brother after he was born.. he was apparently extremely immature). My dad told my mom that he would not get between a son and his real father and so if his real father wanted to see him, then my dad had no problem with it. That is the real alpha thing to do imho. Anyways, story short.. my bro's real father never showed up after telling him he would. It crushed my bro when he was extremely young but later started calling my dad his dad.
