I am probably a minority, but I actually do not want to bulk due to the following reasons:
- great "feedback"/success I receive from girls after I cut down to measly 158lb at 5'11". Girls love my body and I generally receive my compliments and even felt objectified . As newly single, I didn't realize how much girls are digging a slim muscular look (I guess sorta Brad Pitt fight club look), the downside you look like a manlet in non-formfitting clothes. Obviously more vascularity and even had few occasions of being approached by guys asking me how I got like that. (Funny that it happens when I am at my tiniest) My biceps are still relatively big, lifts actually stayed the same all the way from 172lb to 158lb. I can bench press 225lb (two 45lb plates) on a bar 5-6 times.
- I can do more "extreme exercises" with ease now such as 3 sets of clean dragon flag (10 reps each) or can pull up myself on a bar straight till my waist several times.
- I got my annual physical, everything perfect and my testosterone level is 720, which seems to be average for 25 year old and I am 32.
Now I am a little confused: I am so motivated that I want to cut down to 155lb or even 153lb (my lowest ever was 153lb). My abs are defined, but they could get more defined as I still have slight fat on my stomach.
What would you do? Going close to 150lb at 5'11" seems insane to me yet I get noticed the most when I am tiny. I want to bulk but scared of fattening up On the other hand, since my long-term goal would be 9-10%BF at 170lb, I am considering trying super slow bulk (1lb/month) for entire year. Anyone had success with that? Bulking probably also increases your testosterone level?
Reps for helpful answers.

If you never bulked before you must have a very low muscle build, as i can see in your avi. if you like the skinny with abs look stay where your at, if not bulk. bulk for .5lbs a week, not 1 lb a month since you have room for any gains. I dont get why everyone likes that fight club physque, ugly as fuark and just skinny. but no judging, your choice OP!

Was in a very similar boat as you last summer (August) (stats: 5'7", 158lbs, 9-10bf%, 34yrs old <-- see avi), but immediately started a bulk to hit 185 lbs by February and cut back down to 9-10% bf for this July. I too want the 170lb body @ 10% bf. I believe I will hit 165 lbs at 10% this July. I will then repeat and shoot for 170lbs @ 10 for that next summer.

Personal preference, OP. For me, I was tired of being a skinny **** at 6' 170lbs. No way I ever want to be that small again. Of course, your weight seems to be maintained mostly in your upper body, where my weight is maintained in glutes and thighs. I have an upper body that I've seen on guys at 180 at my height, yet I'm knocking on 200.

If you're newly single and getting laid more, well then do I really have to answer that question??
BUT, if you were 170 and same low BF how much better would the response be??? Hummm? Well you won't know until you get there. And considering you sound like someone that really wants to get there, I bet that's what you end up doing! (And I bet you still do just fine with the babes, assuming they're babes)!!

Typically in a sentence like that you'll want to emphasize the "not" instead of the "did".
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do this I keep on doing. (Romans 7:15,17-19)

I bulked twice in the past. When I started lifting and went down to 153lb from 187 in one swoop I didn't look like anything in my avi
Well... You're also 13lb heavier than my ex-gf (who was fit) and was of your height, and you're 19 FFS, so I suggest you bulk like a monster
Half are babes half are not, always the case
Thanks for the responses everyone else. I think I am going to lose couple pounds, make some pics and then go on bulk before summer is here I have 3 months to bulk and then 2 months to cut before end of May.
Reps to everyone else on recharge.

this. though I know I personally will likely never be satisfied with the way I look at any stage, body dysmorphia of peace.
just do a very small surplus like you mentioned, as low as maybe 100-200 a week if you're happy how you look now. that way your progress will come slowly but it will take you months before you notice any real fat gain.BJJ / Greyskull LP log

Believe it or not, it IS possible to bulk up without ever getting fat. It's like magic really. You reach a certain body fat % and you go on a short cut again. Voila, you are now 5 lbs heavier at the same body fat %.
But I must say, OoChadwickoO thinks you have very little muscle, but from a girl's perspective you have tons of muscle. If you had any more muscle, my wife would probably think you had too much.

Exactly. I already got that from couple of girls: "You look good as you are now and you definitely shouldn't get any bigger". Consistent feedback like that was what affected my normal "let's cut and bulk forever" mentality. I don't think girls are into mountains of muscles, but I guess 170lb at 10% BF at 5'11" would still not even be close to being big.

I consider lean gaining a bulk still. Bulk = putting on weight of any kind. Semantics, I know.
I have 5 sisters in their 30s, and they all think I shouldn't get any more muscular. I'm not going to listen, of course. Also, my wife thinks Frank Zane has waaay too much muscle, and he was, what, 190 lbs? She's only 23 though, so she would still be considered more of a girl.

Are you trying to make fun of my post? (and my posts in general?)
I'm sure you understood the content of this post, but your goal here is to be rude, like the rest of your replies. I'm impressed how a 31 year old man still behaves the way you do.
When a person like you, is constantly being offensive and making fun of others' posts and threads without being banned, makes fun of someone like me whose only goal is to learn and share informative ideas with others, is the moment when I stop posting in this forum.
There are some really good members here who have a lot of knowledge and post their answers in a nice and polite way to help the users achieve their goals, but others are just the opposite; you are one.
I reported your offensive posts against me, but there are also plenty against other people. I think that the moderators here should ban you, because you are not a good member and not doing any good for the forum.

I say bulk.. You won't get "fat" in the tradtional sense because you lift.. You will put on weight, but the weight will look different on you in comparison to someone who puts on 20 lbs just sitting on the couch...

5'11" at 158lbs.....
Have you ever bulked properly? A 5'11" frame should be relatively lean at 180lbs after a few proper bulk/cut cycles and proper diet/lifting routine.
When I was in the 150s I was emaciated. Two years later and I'm fairly lean at 200lbs (32" jeans and vascular). I would never want to be 150s again ever, and I would venture to say with my LBM it wouldn't be possible.
Bulk to 200lbs. TBH, it's the guys afraid of putting on fat that never see their potential. A buddy of mine plays football and is your height. He's lean as hell at 205lbs and wants to be 240s and lean by the end of his senior year of college. This is probably impossible without some kind of drugs, but he's already way ahead of the game at 19 years old.IIFYM - not even once.

You gotta factor in about 10 lbs per inch of height difference. So 150s for you would be like 130 for him, and 110 for me. But I do agree with you. Some fat gain is essential to reach your potential. But you never have to get so fat that you don't look like a bodybuilder any more. 15% is a good ceiling. Most people with a decent base will still have a couple lines on the stomach and waists under 33 inches.
