Losing fat without becoming skinnyfat/losing skinny fat

I'm about 5'10" and 170 lbs. I am trying to lose weight. I currently go to the gym to lift 5 times a week and do cardio 3 times a week, as well as having a calorie deficit. I am eating about 1500-1600 calories a day and taking whey protein after gym, so 5x a week.

Not sure if I'm really skinny fat but will I avoid it if I do this, and if I already am, will this help me lose it?

    pics, completely unflexing

You should probably read t he stickies and calculate your calorie and macro needs.

Whey isn't really necessary if you get enough chicken/steak/ham/whatever meat you like. You don't have to take it after the gym.

I wouldn't personally go 5 x/week, especially if you're new. That ish is time consuming. Go, lift heavy/compound, take a day off, go again. Google starting strength or 5x5.

Not really new. I went a month or two last summer, but stopped when school started, been going back since November. I can handle it. I just need to know if it will work. I like whey protein because it's convenient, and easier to measure, etc, and I don't always have the time/effort to get chicken/beef foods that are healthy.

You're still new. Unless you can squat 2x your body weight, and Dead lift 2.5 x your body weight, you're new. If you like/want whey protein, cool.
You need to focus on compound heavy lifts. 3x a week, give your body a day to rest/recoup.

I mean, yeah. You'll lose weight doing what you're doing. I think 1500-1600 is kinda low. I'd aim 1750-2000 calories.

Post a pic and we will tell you if you are skinny fat. It just means you have a high bodyfat % at a normal body weight. Your goal while losing weight should be to preserve muscle mass. If you are losing no more than 1-2lbs a week then you are ok. The only way to fix skinny fat is to add muscle mass and then drop the excess fat.

I might not be it than. I'm not really 'skinny', I just have some excess fat, but not in a skinnyfat way, if you know what I mean. I'll post pics when I'm home later

edit: ok, pictures are in the OP

If it were me I would cut 10-15 more lbs and bulk for 6-8 months slowly...you need to add some muscle mass to your frame.
