But people starve locally, and the global population has always been rising minus a few hiccups here and there. It's hard to draw too much from that relationship given all the other complicating factors that go along with it (eg distribution, local/regional strife, etc). Maybe I missed the point of the statement. I have this weird feeling we're coming back to potatoes again.

My point is producing MORE food won't help with starvation. Better distribution is needed.
And as far as people involved in sustainable agriculture not caring: bull****. There are people who working hard to find ways to make those in the problem areas able to procure their own food and water.
There are other answers besides GMO foods.Sheriff John Brown always hated me

Every time I plant a seed
He said kill them before they grow

Distribution can be expensive, obviously. Growing it closer to home where possible would be best. There are situations where GMO might work out just great for that purpose, and others it may not matter neglecting the economics of the farmer. I have no problem with engineered foods. We've been engineering them in one form or another for many millennia.

We are powerless to control the people who starve THEIR OWN people as a means of controlling them. We cannot just go hand out food the way we do it here at home. We have to go through gang controlled governments. There is enough food to feed the world, and the means to get it there. The issue (as it normally is) the distribution on the other end.

Interesting thread morphing going on.
OP: It stems from the "I can count to Potato" meme. Throw the word Potato in randomly where it doesn't make sense and it turns into a stupid/retarded (<--not my choice of word) reference.
edit: Agree bbsitum catches too much crap. Language barriers are a PITA sometimes.

It is all really simple. You need mass farming in order to feed the world. Organic farming does have it's niche, although it is a small one, and always will be. Organic farmers have to be certified, and have to do less with more, so all in all, it is an expensive process so you pay more for organic food. Meh, I prefer to go the cheaper route, of course I grow a big portion of my food. In mass farming it is all about technology which is constantly evolving. A farmer can not afford to get behind the 8 ball so to speak, he has to keep up with the latest innovations. The food supply chain we have in place here, is the safest in the world. Believe me on this as I am a producer and also an agricultural inspector.

Lord yes it's expensive. We have Whole Foods, Trader Joes and then the Willy Street Co-op here in Madison. I actually like Trader Joes as they sell normal food as well as organic and I likeWhole foods also but can't afford to shop there. Willy St is probably the biggest we have and it's full of hippies all the time, a lot of them are college kids so other than getting $$$ from the parents I don't know how they can even afford to shop there?
And for people who don't know Madison Wi we have a $hit ton of hippies as well as wanna be hippies, hell my wife would love to be one. State St is filled with hippies and their shops as is Willy St, actual name is Williamson St.

Ha ha! Weird is right. I hadn't been to Austin in years, just driven through at 80 mph on my way farther south. I was there back in early July. Man that place has grown. It's over a million now! It's really an attractive city, but I wouldn't want to live there. I'm a bit weird, just not so much so to really fit in there. Ha!
