    WWE RAW: Average Yearly Ratings

Here is the chart. It looks like 2012 was one of the worst years in the history of RAW. Not only that but the ratings have been on a steady decline since 2006.

The 3 hour format saturates viewership through the show too much. It's damaging not only the ratings but viewers' interest in the product itself. It's just an overkill. They need to go back to 2 hours before they completely ruin themselves like WCW did.

From a ratings perspective, ending the brand split would help I bet. But I bet that would hurt overall profits.

2013 might be the first year in FOREVER where WWE RAW's average ratings fall below 3.0.

The problem isn't really the length of the show (although that has some effect). It's the fact that RAW is literally just a series of essentially unrelated segments rather than an ongoing narrative. There's nothing happening and developing over the course of the show to keep you watching from the opening segment through to the end of the episode.

They need to go back and watch the RAW from (I think) just after Revenge of the 'Taker to see how to maintain interest across a program by centering the show on one unfolding story (Austin/Bret streetfight, Austin assaulting crippled Bret backstage, eventually Pillman returns), while developing other feuds in between/while you wait for the next step in the night's ongoing story. It wouldn't knock the ratings way up, but I guarentee it would reduce third hour drops.

3 hour raw didn't help. it's all background noise for me until **** happens. who the **** has 3 hours to watch wrestling? (excluding ppv of course lol).

i know a lot of people who just go online the next day (or even the next hour) and watch RAW on youtube. And then people in different time zone would probably go online and watch streaming. Not saying the low rating isn't wwe's fault, but there's bunch of other variable as well.

i think the best measure would be attendance and merch sold. would be interesting if WWE experiences the same trend of decline

I think its funny how wwe runs their company as if it were a retail store.
brb we gotta make huge profits here.
We only made $50 million last year? Thats not good enough. More Cena!!

Its a phucking tv show. Fans should come first then the money game.
Thats the problem with these phucking millionaires. They're always trying to find a way to make that next million.
And the thing is....these phaggots wont even come close to spending 1/4 of it.

Look how the rating takes a four-year-long plunge after the summer of 2000: even with all the great stuff still happening, up to and including Rock/Austin, wrestling was becoming less popular in North America, and there was really nothing that could've arrested that general trend.

Then, between the summers of 2004 and 2006, the rating climbs back up to a level that it hadn't reached since around the spring/summer of 2002.

    Any ideas why?

That was at WM18 in 2002. Yeah, the botched Alliance angle was the final straw for many people, I think. Didn't InVasion pop the biggest non-WrestleMania buyrate ever? Well over 700,000.

So the interest was there for it, but they were just too f*cking inept by that point. I stopped watching between RR 2003 and whenever Edge started feuding with Cena.

The InVasion PPV was pretty good and I think most people rate the RAW where ECW debuted and then joined WCW as being very good (another good example of a show with an unfolding story). It just got schit when the Alliance kept losing, Austin was their boss because Vince was too cheap to buy the good talent, and there were three hundred belts swapping hands every night.

In my view, that Raw was the single best two hours of the whole thing. The former ECW guys running out and turning on the WWF? Absolutely brilliant.

"Where there's chaos, JR, there's opportunity." Heyman's debut on commentary 5 months earlier made sense when it all came full circle. He was the enemy within.

    Great storytelling.

Merchandise sales are doing a little better but it may be hard to compare.

    1) WWE merchandise is available in far more stores than historical. For example, they are not available in more countries than ever.

    2) More people shop online these days than ever.

    3) Kids buy a lot of WWE stuff.

    4) $100 of today is like $150 from the year 2000. Every year, money loses value because of inflation, therefore year-to-year revenue comparisons might be somewhat irrelevant.

Then, between the summers of 2004 and 2006, the rating climbs back up to a level that it hadn't reached since around the spring/summer of 2002.

    Any ideas why?

My guess would be the rise of John Cena and Batista as two fresh, brand new main eventers. I remember around November or so in 2004, Raw and Smackdown became very interesting to watch because the two of them were still just upper midcarders and the anticipation for them to break through was reaching a boiling point. And really, compare Wrestlemania 21 to most of the Manias that came before and after it. WWE took a HUGE risk by putting them both in the main events against JBL and HHH. Not only that, but WWE booked both of them to win their respective first-ever world titles within an hour of each other. Not at Summerslam, not at some B or C level payperview... at Wrestlemania.

Two years later, late 2006, Cena was getting booed out of the building, Batista was now clearly the number two to Cena's number one, and no one else was even close, even Randy Orton.

EDIT: There was also the move to TNN in September 2000, a channel well known for being a yeehaw cowboy country music channel, so much so that it was later rechristened Spike TV. While that shouldn't have messed with viewership in the long term, I still think it's a possibility that both viewers and WWE themselves saw that as a downgrade from USA. I know it might sound like a ridiculous idea, but why such a celebration upon returning to USA? That happened in October 2005, by the way.

I would be interested to learn how that match's viewership for all channels across the board and what decline other programs have seen year of year for the past decade

The real telling thing though is the fact it went to three hour's last year. If it wasn't a strong performer it wouldn't have increased the size of the show by 33% at the behest of the channel owners

That bar graph doesn't show the whole story

The graph is also misleading because the y-axis doesn't start at zero. Just glancing at it gives the impression that viewership today is a seventh of what it was in 1999/2000, but it's actually still over half.

Best match of the night was RVD. I was suprised.

I tuned back in when Evolution began. That was actually bad ass. Orton got the belt, then they phucked that angle up but having him lose it shortly after.

It doesn't start from zero in order to see the decline better. If it started from zero, the line would look flattish, even though having ratings drop from high 4%s to low 3%s is a sharp decline.

By the way, during the same period, WWE's stock price also followed a similar pattern, falling from $22 in 2000 to $8 in 2012.

thje graph is a bit useless. You need to edit out the ratings pre 2003 or 2004 (aka the attitude era ratings), to get rid of the attitude era extremes. Screws up the range and makes the graph useless for the last decade ratings. It would be much more telling to redo the graph and see the rating fluctuations from '03 to now

inb4 "its only because people go on their ipads now and don't watch TV"

If WWE focused half of the effort they put into their embarrassing social media projects (WWE App, Tout, etc) into the writing, the ratings might turn around a little. Let's face it, WWE lost its heart when it became a corporation first, wrestling company second. Every single problem it has boils down to that. I kind of hope it keeps falling and falling until TNA actually becomes its competition and Vince finally has to change things.

You guys ever think that part of the reason for the decline is Vince has no competition? In the Attitude Era WWE writers had to be on their toes and produce a great product. They're the only game in town now. TNA isn't really a viable threat. Seems to me like it's a combination of going PG and creative losing their edge.

This information is widely available if you know how to use Google. I can't post links since I have less than 50 posts. Go to google and search for wwe raw historical ratings.
