I know 40-40-20 is the standard but is 40% protein really necessary?

None, those are BS. Read the stickies for specific numbers you should hit.

(For 5 reps)
Squat - 110kg
Deadlift- 115kg
Bench Press - 65kg
Overhead Press - 47.5kg
