So many have been mentioned. Dirty Dozen, To Kill a Mockingbird, Miracle on 34th Street. All great!
I also love The Quiet Man with John Wayne and the beautiful Maureen O'Hara.

I don't have a sure numerical list, but some of my favorites:
Empire Strikes Back
It's a Wonderful Life
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Batman Begins
Godfather 1 & II
Scarface
On The Waterfront
Chinatown
There Will Be Blood
LOTD: Two Towers
Back to the Future (nostalgia)
E.T.
The Man Who Came to Dinner
Inception
Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
Dog Day Afternoon
Let me tell you; Gone With The Wind, that music! Good Lord. Music seems to hit me hard. When I hear that sweeping melody, I just about lose it. Ha ha! Who knows the name of the fellow or gal who composed that, but it's something else!

Please take the time to see this movie, if you haven't..
Gets me everytime, and the reason is, Schindler's list is NOT really just a holocaust movie...the holocaust is the backdrop of that movie...Schindler's list is about SCHINDLER; a man's journey from being a totally SELFISH person, to the ending, where he achieves TOTAL UNSELFISHNESS....
in that regard, it is a beautiful experience to witness and very emotional.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC: laugh all you want, but this timeless tale of the Family Von Trapp and their escape from Fascism, along with one of the sweetest love stories ever on celluloid, only gets greater with the most superior soundtrack of all time.
BAMBI: an adult themed movie disguised as a children's movie; Disney's praise to nature had Survival of the Fittest and Continuation of the Species cleverly hidden under the seemingly child like antics. Goes right over young people's heads.
TITANIC: Cameron's magnum opus which contains incredible details that he worked on for YEARS before finally getting this one out.
FOREST GUMP: more about human nature than any movie ever made, and possibly the most singular best acting job of all time by Hanks
EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: the best installment, in one of the best continued stories ever dreamed up...no matter how many times I rewatch these, this one always sticks out the most.
MR HOLLAND's OPUS: life happens, and just like in this movie, we are swept up in it, and our dreams are often derailed...but in this movie, his dream was being fulfilled without him even knowing it.
SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION: what more can you say about this one! an uncrowned winner that came out in the wrong year...makes the top ten lists everywhere.
AVATAR: I could go on all day about CAMERON, he just keeps on topping himself. In this movie you are immersed right into the world they are depicting, as if you become part of the forest, yourself and you don't want to leave.
THE SEVEN SAMURAI: Kurosawa's masterpiece which spawned hundreds of copycat movies with similar themes, but this one is a real journey and insight into the human soul.
CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: when you can take a genre that is laughed and scorned at, and raise it to an art form, as in this movie, it is quite an accomplishment.
ELMER GANTRY: religious cons will always exist and so, this movie is timeless, containing the greatest performance of one of the greatest actors of all time, Burt Lancaster....the greatest con, because there are no refunds! lol...it will never grow old, the concepts in this movie.
LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY: the best adaptation of book to movie, ever, period....a risky chance filming all three simultaneously, but was profitable from the very first one. One of the rare times book readers were not disappointed.
hey, I could go on all day, and these are just some epics that come to mind: there are hundreds of more simpler movies that I could watch over and over again.

couldn't agree more.
regarding your movie list, why do you say that Shawshank was in the wrong year? just curious what you mean, there.

(someone from the other site I was speaking of in my sig earlier, saw my sig, and asked me to remove it. :( IDK why. Thought I was helping. O well)
because it had to go up against FOREST GUMP which was equally great, but epic, and unfortunately, everyone else was going to lose that year....
Very similar to that was the year that TITANIC won, and rightfully so, however, it left in it's wake two EXCELLENT movies: As Good as it Gets, and Good Will Hunting, each of which could easily have won in another year.
these days, there are not usually that many good movies in one year, but if you go back to the 40s and 50s, it was commonplace, and the Oscars were very stiff competition for everyone, especially, for best ACTOR, as it was nothing but screen icons going against one another year after year.
David Niven, against Burt Lancaster, against Lawrence Olivier, against Spencer Tracy...just crazy competition...
it was equally difficult to win for the ladies also...Kate Hepburn was that era's version of Meryl Streep, nominated almost every year....and you had some of those Goddesses going against each other, like Ava Gardner, and Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor....similar crazy competition.

I'd only leave out a couple, but very nice list! (srs)

I've not seen any of the new ones. Anything made in the last 30 years or so! LOL I've heard that Les Miserables is phenomenal, and Phantom of the Opera was acclaimed as well. When there's a good story line, and excellent music, I do enjoy them.
Sorry to hear your wife is under the weather Corbi. Hope she gets better quick!
Edit: Ha ha, remembering back, a neighbor lady, Shirley Hill, piled a whole bunch of us kids into her Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser and we went to the drive in theater to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! Great movie!

You will need that tight clench, because I will be working hard to pry that gawdamn card from those curled and twisted fingers.

I've got my own list of movies but The Sound of Music doesn't even come near the top. More like the bottom, along with Plan Nine from Outer Space and Night of the Ghouls. Come to think of it, those two movies were better. TSOM is a sanitized version of the horrors of the real war the goose-steppers perpetrated. Schindler's List does a very good job of showing what monsters the Nazis really were. If you go on YouTube, you can see the a documentary on Chiune Sugihara, often called "The Japanese Schindler". The documentary is called "Conspiracy of Kindness".
My favourites in no particular order are as follows:
The Ten Commandments
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Superman (1978)
The Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
El Hombre Quieto
Gladiator
Shall we Dance?
Frankenstein (1931) and the Spanish Dracula (also 1931)
Lots of others.

LMAO You've never seen Gigi? Ha ha One wonderful song: "Thank heaven...for little girls... they grow up in the most amazing way!" Can't remember the name of the old French actor who sang that song. Classic! Ha ha
Ah, google ~ one amazing thing! Maurice Chevalier was the old gentleman's name.

some great laughs here...and remember, I think I mentioned in the beginning my friend that was trying to comprise a list and he ended up culling down to 100, and he started from about 300!!!!!!!!
lots of great old movies over the years....
