    Olympic barbell UK help plz

Recently ordered used bodysolid power rack and bodysolid bench with leg curls and preacher. All good and dandy. Next step is getting a proper barbell.

I ran a search on google and found pretty much 2 different types of 1000-1500lb bars, ones for £100+ and some for £300+. Obviously I don't need a bulletproof powerlifting style barbell but I want something solid thats gonna outlast me (like my new power rack).

I found a couple of them, this is for UK only:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chrome-Olymp...6651383&sr=1-5
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bodymax-Olym...6651383&sr=1-6
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Axle-Weigh...item416bcb9c3b

Are these any good? Obviously I want to pay as little as possible but still want quality. And what's up with the coating types? Is there any best type of coating/finish? Appreciate help, reps for good advice.

    .

The bottom link is for an axle, which is about 2 inches thick all the way through. Google 'thick bar training' and all will be revealed. I wouldnt want to use it exclusivly, so this would not be my first purchase for a bar. The two top links are pretty much the same bar. Although they are not elite bars they will be just fine for normal use, and are about as good as you can get here in the UK unfortunatly in that price bracket. If you are looking to spend a bit more then I highly reccomend the texas power bar. Last time I looked the cheapest place to buy it was strengthshop.co.uk. TPBs are about £420 which is a rip off, but once you get the bar the pain of the purchase seems to go away.

The coatings are a preferance thing. Chrome (especially cheap chrome) has a tendancy to flake off with sharp edges, some look nicer, some last longer, while other coatings can often give a little grip advantage as they can be rough even without knurling.

    What about these bars? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOVOTEC-BE...item3a78f387b3
They are warped (see vid). Does it compromise strength in any way?
I don't really want to spend another 400 quid on the gear just now (spent nearly 1 grand already on the rack, lat attachment, bench).

Yeah, they must have bought a lot of those bars because they've had that listing for a good few years now. Not sure how much the strength will be affected, its your call, but I would rather buy the 2 you linked above. The bar in that link has bearings which are unnecesary for normal bodybuilding or powerlifting movements.

I know the feeling mate, I was lucky I bought mine when I was going through a little flush phase, I couldn't afford it now though. I'm after the texas deadlift bar sometime, but I don't think its going to happen for sometime soon, although its giving me another incentive to build up my **** deadlift numbers to bend the crappy bar I have so I can justify it.

edit, another reason I would never deal with gymratz is that they were totally inflexible on thier prices when I contacted them about a discount. At the time I was looking to buy a BS power rack, bench, 280kg oly weight set, mats etc. and they wouldnt even give me a small 10% discount on thier already hiked prices. So I went elsewhere.

Strong reasons to get the deadlift numbers up haha.

I didn't see that the price was excluding vat. That's a douche move. I guess I'll just get that bodymax barbell for £110 and be done with it. When I start deadlifting and squatting 500lbs (if ever lols) I'll get a better barbell.

One last question. Anyone got any idea if there is a dip attachment for bodysolid power rack?

Without searching I would say, not that I know of. But I can recommend thier freestanding dip stand, its solid as a rock, I had mine for years before selling it on. It takes a lot of space but its great to have. They come up on ebay all the time, so I wouldn't go buying one new.

They seem a good company and I was very close to buying a bar off them, but thier prices are equal to a TPB which seems a liitle steep to me. Considering they are not having to ship it, and that it hasn't got the reputation yet of the TPB I would have thought they would have priced it a little lower until they were at least a little better known. I can't fault the guy on the phone though, he comes across as a good bloke.

I can't fault the guy on the phone though, he comes across as a good bloke.
the renagade bar comes out to around £330 shipped, which i don't think is too bad, looks like a nice high quality bar thats actualy made here.

agree on the service, he kept me up to date with there rack as they were developing it, and always replies quick to questions, just waiting for them to get the stone molds back in now.

Oh, I forgot about that bar. When you mentioned the bulldoggear I was thinking about the power bar as that was the one I was deciding between when I was deciding between bars. £470 is a lot of cash considering the competition, but it would be nice to have a British made bar.

@JMS32, judging by the close up of that bar, it looks to be made by the same folks that made those bumpers of yours- the machining looks very rough. Not sure I would trust it, even with the warranty. The Okie bars seem to have a good reputation though so I'd rather spend a bit more and get that.

As always with these discussions it all just depends on the OPs financial constraints and spending habits. lol

Yeh I have learned my lesson on buying cheap If I was going to spend £200+ then I'd just wait and save a bit longer and buy a TPB

I could spend even 500 quid for a bar but what's the point? I'm still dead lifting below 300lb (doing 531 wendler). I could spend that money and get some more weights instead. This £200 bar looks good, I may get it after all. Not entirely sure I want to get the bodymax one, it looks exactly like my crappy 700lb one.
