Being depressed because of cash problems and career issues is NOTHING to be ashamed of, at all.
In the year 2000, I got very depressed hearing all the murder and **** stories at the prison I strongly considered going into IT to escape. And, IT pays a lot more than psych, so it was very tempting. I'm a very stoic person most of the time but even a strong person can get beaten up a bit.
There's nothing shameful about being confused at a crossroads. If you want to ask me a question:

04-12-2013, 06:00 PM #874My initial plan was med school. I've never thought about a career in psychology. I chose psychology because:
a) I never felt 'normal', or felt that I fit in with others and wanted to know why.
b) I wanted to know if I could somehow 'fix' this, become normal and happy.
Normal to me means being uninhibited, and confident, a person with purpose and concrete goals and the determination to achieve them.
If I want to do anything in the psych field, it'd be to work with autistic individuals, drug abusers, as a case worker, etc. But I do not feel I have the necessary social skills to pull them off. I haven't tried so don't know if I'd be good at it.
Meanwhile, I have met a HOST of odd people working in psych and you need to cut yourself a break. One dude I used to work with would bring up penises and gay sex in EVERY, and I mean every staff meeting, no matter what it was about. Another dude told me his BABY was out to get him, hit him with a rattle, and that's why he needed a divorce. A female therapist I worked with for sex offenders wanted to prohibit the clients from saying "dirty words" when discussing sex.
I've spent most of my career hiding in my office.
My first real job was working with autistic adults and it changed how I look at life, so it may be worth trying out. It will also train you to have the patience of the gods.
I have looked over the programming materials and they look manageable. Do I want to be a programmer? Why not? I'm very vision driven and programming is about creativity and vision..and a lot of patience. Now logical thinking is what worries me as it's my weak point, and also the patience factor.
And will do. I might as well improve what I can, and that's my health. That's within my control now.
I noodled around with C++ and it's interesting. Computers are extremely interesting and will never end until they invent artificial brains, which isn't going to be soon.
A guy I know travels around fixing voting machines, another is a routing expert, via Cisco, and I've known animation people, so there's lots to do.
I think you need to seriously meditate on who you are though. You liked medicine and were interested in psych and those are VERY people, adventure oriented activities. Computers are more solitary and technical, although creativity is there, so you need to decide who you are really are. Like, not just the "depressed" you but the you that's "On", what does he need.If you want to ask me a question:

Not to be corny, but you have to go sit by a lake, have a beer, or whatever where you sit and think, reflecting on what you like, asking questions, and so on. You need to imagine the future and compare it your past. What do you want to change?
It's like watching a movie by yourself versus with friends or your family. When you watch it quietly you have a real impression of the film and have your opinion. When you watch it with friends and family you might be distracted by them or hide your real opinion.
Sit quietly and review your life and opinions.
The only exposure I had with Ellis was maybe in a psych book where his theories were reduced to half a page. Any particular book of his you recommend?
Wow that's weird what you described about those people. Makes me feel better, and perversely so.
I was thinking about behavioral tech (program title: behavioral science technology) but not sure what I could do with this. Do you have any idea about this?
I'm reminded of Scientology.
Also, thanks for your help and input. If you want to ask me a question:

Sorry, I was confused by "behavioral science technology" because I didn't understand what "technology" meant. I was joking about Scientology because they use the word "technology" in a funny kind of way sometimes.
The description you provided sounds pretty interesting. I love Behaviorism and there's tons of applications for it.
Regarding autism and mentally retarded people, you'll be learning how to, hopefully, shape their behavior through fairly simple Behavioral strategies. You should look at the coursework and reading materials to see if it looks interesting to you.If you want to ask me a question:

I do and I don't.
I see meditation as turning off your surface thoughts and taking a break from it all.
I've read about the mystical kind and the technical. For instance, the technical saying sit quietly and count to seven repeatedly.
Okay, I've tried that and I find it boring. However, when I'm in the gym lifting, my mind shuts off because I'm focusing on the heavy lifts, counting, and nothing else is going on, it's like I'm in a time warp. The same goes for biking, but there's the occasional curse and hatred for the various drivers trying to kill me, but generally speaking, it's meditative. Going for a walk is similar.
Close seconds are, creative writing and painting.
My main meditative state is found in lifting though and I do that for an hour and half to two hours.
It's good to have something like it in life to avoid anxiety and built up anger. But, I'm glad I'm not being corny about it sitting in a toga praying to the universe. I feel cooler and more functional using exercise as my technique, but everyone is different. If you want to ask me a question:

That's a pretty big question, and I'm not sure what you mean by "re meds".
Usually, people get that diagnosis when no one, including them, can figure out why they're anxious. Some people call it, Free Floating Anxiety, because it floats around from situation to situation. The opposite would be anxiety about a certain thing like travel, social situations, etc.
Many times, doctors will suggest meds because talk therapy does nothing because the client doesn't know what to talk about. But, there's plenty of Behavioral and other therapies that will try, try, try to figure it out.
Largely, it depends on what you want.If you want to ask me a question:

Adlerian, what led you to this website to the misc in the first place? Were actually interesting in lifting advice and wondered in to the misc?

I've been lifting for 28 years and have been looking at the site practically since it began. I started posting when I became interested in supps again. Then, I got into the politics section, but it's hard to have a convo there because people just repeat the same stuff, but the misc is far more open minded.
I've been on the net for a LONG time, and this is the best board. BB.com is also a super resource, in general. If you want to ask me a question:

let me know when you copy over our pm's to here, so we can talk about:
1) how you're a dumbass for being detected on misc - seeing how you're a "psychotherapist"
2) why you're a social worker pretending to be a psychologist
3) if we have time we can talk about your avoidance and poor usage of other defense mechanisms
4) if we have even more time, we can dig up your dissertation and play around with that as well

What are your thoughts on creative and logical minds.
Do you believe that a logical mind makes it hard for a mind to be creative?
Do you believe that all people are inherently creative, but in different ways, or are there those that just outright lack creativity?-Crohn's Disease crew

To be creative as I see it, you have to have some logic going on. For instance, if you're throwing paint at a canvas you'll get mud color if you throw the wrong color combos. So, even someone "formlessly" creative like that has to be thinking and planning. If you're writing a science fiction book about balloon aliens having a war, there's going to be logic to the whole thing. Even if it sucks, there's still going to be ideas that make sense.
Meanwhile, there are logical people who are practical. They know how to do things in the world and make sense of it all. Such a person might be good at building a bridge or planning a dinner. Those things are creative, but I think there are practical people who aren't THAT creative.
We are animals and animals do things that appear logical, like gathering and storing food for winter. I'm sure there's people like that, organic robots good at a narrow focus of activities. That probably has to do with IQ more than anything. If you want to ask me a question:

The great thing about BB is that most people are a lot like me, curious about a wide variety of topics. I think that's because bodybuilding/fitness is a very hopeful activity where people want to be at their height. When you're like that, you want you mind at it's height too, so you're full of questions and thoughts.
I used to post on a philosophy board and they were much more boring, in spite of supposedly being interested in philosophy. If you want to ask me a question:

Have I had lunch, and if so, what?
Kidding.
Once in high school I destroyed (didn't enjoy it) seven guys who decided to jump me for fun. The trick was smacking them into each other and using the crowding of the attack against them, that and rage because one got my pants muddy! So, I'd take the 100, although the warehouse situation sounds heinous as I'm picturing it.
Last week I was trying to move a couch down a narrow set of stairs and it got stuck. The couch was for the trash, so I decided to tear it apart and demolish it with a hammer. I reduced in to nothing in no time! I knew a guy who crushed another's skull with a wooden bat, for saying he was going slap a girl's ass. From what I understand, it didn't take much and the killer wasn't very big, so I could reduce that 100 pretty quick.
The only problem would be watching my back. I assume there's boxes and stuff in the warehouse.
Maybe boxes filled with laserguns? If you want to ask me a question:
