Want to start competing in powerlifting, how do I compare?
Hey everybody,
I'm playing football in college right now and I'm thinking about starting to compete in powerlifting soon either for school or on my own and I was just curious to see how I would stack up with the competition right now. I'm 19 and I weigh 194lbs (I could definitely cut more than a few lbs off of that too), and right now my back squat 1rm is up around 490, my bench is at 340, and my deadlift is at 415. I couldn't really find any info or numbers for what to expect so if yall got any ideas let me know!
Thanks

Give up now. You'll never be competitive.

How's your squat form? It seems weird that you squat so much more than you deadlift.

I would like to think you got a weak DL and not a high SQ...(I'm probably wrong). As long as you get in the gym thinking that every week you gonna move more weight you gonna do good in PL...now if you just gonna go and just load bars and max everytime there are cute girls or you wanna impress your buddies...PL is not for you...do a research on federations that do meets in your area and you will be able to figure out how your numbers stand in your state.

Quite a few people do daily maxes and go from there, so I don't get the bolded part and no I don't do daily maxes.

oopss...I was referring to the typical gym rats that want to go and max out bench daily just to impress someone in the gym...then they wonder why is their bench not going up...

Once you finish a competition you will know exactly how you compare, until that happens it will remain one of the great mysteries of the universe.

Stop comparing yourself to others. The real competition is the one you have against yourself

just pick one, do one, dont worry about the results right now just get your lifts in and learn how judging is. Then when you get a competition total, this is how you compare.

I don't get why people want to know how they compare. Powerlifting is a competition with yourself. You can only really compare yourself to someone who is exactly the same weight. And then again you can't because everyone excels in different lifts. It's about going out there to beat your total and have fun. Beat your PRs. Have fun.

Do a meet it doesn't matter how weak you are you will learn a lot and have a good time. Meets are for your benefit and will give you numbers to work toward improving. THere is no money in powerlifting its a sport for yourself so don't worry about how you compare.

big difference is learning howto squat to depth and pause your benching . . . expect your numbers to go down a little at first. Also, for your first PL meet dont worry about cutting weight or anything like that.
