30. You can't find the item to take a photo of it but you want to sell it to me. This actually happened today (email exchange).
31. When asked if the plates are the same brand as the bar, the seller says that they're Olympic plates and they're round... and that Play it Again Sports would pay more than his asking price of $1.10 per pound (same guy as #30)[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #32 []---[] ()---() York Barbell Club #43 ()---() ▉---▉ Equipment Crew #50 ▉---▉

Some guy advertised "two pairs" of Ivanko training collars and "two pairs" of Quicklee collars for $60. The photo shows one pair of each. I ask the guy if he actually has "two pairs" (four) of the Ivankos. He says yes. He agrees to accept $30 PayPal payment for the "two pairs" of Ivankos and to ship them to me for $6 (it's not worth driving that far for just some collars). I pay him $36. After payment is of course when he acts surprised that I want "two pairs". I realize that something is up and start a PayPal dispute. After many frustrating email exchanges, I get a refund. ...just about that time, I noticed that he had carbon copied another email address so I look it up and find that she's an interpreter. Apparently the guy doesn't speak English and apparently doesn't know the meaning of the word "pair".

funny e-mail exchange
Would you consider shipping all the plates in a post office flat rate Priority mail box?
Hello,
Yes, I am willing to ship if you are willing to pay for the flat-rate costs plus two hours of warehouse personnel time of $19.50 per hour to pack and deliver to post office.
Thank you,
------
I understand you are upset, but the employee has to drive to the post office (fuel and mileage) find the right boxes (will take several, the post office has limits on weight, we know), drive back, wrap and seal, then go back to the post office, stand in line, and finally, drive back. Sorry you do not understand.
Thanks,
------
------, Priority boxes can be delivered by the post office free of charge and packages can be picked up with the rest of outgoing mail. Flat rate boxes have a weight limit of 70 lbs. The weights are conveniently written on the plates and add up to less than 50 lbs. I could explain to you how to run your business more efficiently but I suspect it would take a long time to draw everything out as a story book. I would need to charge $200 per hour. Time is money and I've already spent 2 minutes reading and replying to your email. It probably took 20 minutes for you to compose your emails so let's just say we're even and cut our losses. Good luck to you.[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #32 []---[] ()---() York Barbell Club #43 ()---() ▉---▉ Equipment Crew #50 ▉---▉

Thanks. I was in a playful mood. I don't have much patience for shop owners that are smart a----. I did show greater patience with the lady who sold me some ROEZH plates on the 'bay. It took more than half a dozen emails to get her auction listed correctly but it worked out well in the end. Her feedback for me was "Very helpful and patient with the transaction." I'm going to leave her good feedback also. Unfortunately, she got slammed with a neg from another buyer who wasn't as tolerant.

32. When you daily re-post an ad for useless overpriced crap at inflated prices. You can watch some of these ads for weeks and see the prices fall slowly, but any potential buyers have lost interest.
33. When you sell a treadmill (or similar) and and just say "treadmill for sale". Please state specific model so I can research it.
34. When you use text jargon and misspell every second word in your description.
I have run into almost all of the reasons listed in previous posts.Last edited by My2BoysDad; 04-13-2013 at 06:46 AM. Reason: sentence structure

I've seen a couple guys who think that "metal doesn't depreciate" so they think they should be getting back as much or close to what they initially paid for brand new weights, racks, etc. The first guy wanted $200 for his $200 weight set (possibly rusty, can't remember), and the other guy wants at least $500 for a $600 Nautilus half rack (includes weights, bench and bars) he's had for over 5 years.

There's a guy near me that flips higher end equipment. A lot of it is at the MSRP and sometimes even more than MSRP. Most of it is heavily used gym liquidations. He mostly uses stock photos so that you don't see the rust on the actual stuff. He's had the same stuff listed for 6 months to a year and it's a complete waste of time to try to negotiate with him. I don't alway recognize his posts and I've contacted him about a few things, not realizing it was him. He's quite proud of himself and likes to talk about how long he's been flipping gear. At his prices, it's got to be a VERY long time. LOL.

Hey look.... does this look familiar? I mean.....why would anyone NOT want to way overpay for a seated calf raise devise that may or may not have new pads, may or may not be commercial, and can almost be seen under all the crap on top of it!
Hell, now that I look at the picture again....this one pretty much covers both of my "craigslist idiot rules".....

I agree with many of these, for sure....and the thread is hilarious. However, I disagree with 2 things off of your list. First is the "still available" thing. I've sold stuff within an hour of listing, and I've called on many items that were sold within hours, so I think that question, even on day one is reasonable. Second is the hanging out to chat thing. The guys who came up to get my Ivanko plates yesterday had responded to my Craigslist ad for them. They drove almost 3 hours for them, and they happen to be bb.com members. They were great guys, and stayed to BS for about an hour. No problem with that, whatsoever.
That being said, half of the people I deal with on craigslist end up being idiots, so I highly approve of this thread.Last edited by Paulie_G; 04-14-2013 at 07:28 AM.

Those can be translated as follows:
35. They want a ridiculous amount of money for it and are ashamed to even post the amount
36. They're cement weights... or the equipment is badly rusted... or they're in a flooded storage unit
lol
Lower right hand corner.
There are always exceptions to the rules... for example, if I break one of them it's ok
I suppose that the chatting depends on the people and the timing.
I do think "still available" is a waste of time if that's the only content of the email. On a few occasions, I told someone "yes" and then sold it to someone else before they replied. If they had gotten to the point, they may have gotten it.

Part II of the conversation!!
Geeze, dude! Like I told you, I am sorry you are so upset. If you don't understand, you don't understand. It is okay, there is no need to be so angry. Sorry it didn't work out for you. Take care.
LOL, you really are upset. Look, did you not say that time was money? I can't believe how much time you are putting into getting your anger across. Would you like the phone number to yell at me? Come on, brother.

Tell them you'll instruct usps to deliver the boxes to their warehouse and you'll mail them a prepaid self-adhering shipping label... and you'll even schedule the pickup (you can do this online)!! 99% chance they respond with more nonsense. Some people really confuse me. Being lazy seems like so much damn work. It took more time to say why s/he won't do it than it would have to just do it.

Here's her reply to my offer to charge per phone call. It seems she wants the heavy breathing. ...I suppose that makes sense since in one of her emails she used a greeting that she probably learned in Yoga. I didn't reply back to her email.
Come on, brother... you are wildly contradicting yourself at this point. Shh, breathe, it's okay.
The scheduled pickup, prepaid label and pickup are good ideas.

I assume this is just a scam. There's no photos and the description is about as vague as it gets. "Email for pictures IF YOU REALLY WANT TO BUY" but how on earth could anyone know if they really want to buy when there are no photos and they don't even say what they are selling?! No price is listed and it's best offer... but weights are included in the price? LOL!
>>>>I suspect that it is intentionally vague, to gain contact information. Otherwise it just doesn't make any sense.
But I have seen legit ads that were almost as vague.
Weight Equipment(BEST OFFER) (Mounds View)
BEST OFFER...... PLUS shipping and handling if you are unable to pick it up... It is in great shape. PLUS weights included in the price.. Any other questions please let me know

39. The seller lists an item but stays so busy that they can't even schedule a time for the buyer to come pick the item up.
I have been trying to buy something at the sellers full asking price for a week, but they have yet to schedule a pick up time. They have responded to some of my texts, but none of my calls or my original email inquiry.[]---[] Equipment crew member #51 []---[]

I hate this. For some reason the local CL for South Florida has tons of ads like this:
Title: Exercise equipment
Description:
Good excercise equipment. $120 firm. 555-123-4568
