Not sure if serious, but Starting Strength is one of the most popular beginner lifting programs in the world. Helps kids who have never worked out in their lives build strength through compound lifts, until they have a solid enough base and are ready to explore other programs.

Never heard anyone badmouth it really, just a solid program, good book too.

You need to engage in myofibrillar hypertrophy utilizing the 1-6 repetition range prior to doing sarcoplasmic hypertrophy in order to get the best results, imo.
But I think everyone who first starts out in the gym needs to do a stability phase in which they focus on building functional strength, balance, coordination, and a strong core.

Some people care more about performance than aesthetics

SS gets your strength up fasssst if you do it in a caloric surplus.

Strength is the king of attributes for performance and most people are beginners.

Btw guess who has a bigger chest the guy who works up to 350 on bench and does 225x10 on a back off set or a bro doing flyes with 25s? Every bodybuilder needs to bring up the 1 rep max in order to do more volume at higher weights

SS is good for beginners who are weak as fuk and haven't done anything physical in their whole life.

Srs, most average guys who actually played sports should be able to get away with starting off with a split to acquire aesthetics.

Also, those reddit ****s say to stick with SS until you stop seeing strength gains. Fuk dat chit. I say once you can bench around 180, deadlift and squat 2 plates u should move onto a split for aesthetics.

SS may be overrated depending on who you ask, but the emphesis on compound lifts is a must. I started off on a traditional split (chest/back/legs/arms) and stuck to it forever....my gains sucked then. A few months ago I switched to compounds and all my lifts have went up dramatically and I have put on some quick size.

In short compounds > split; not starting strength > everything else.
    We were all witnesses.

Let them say I misc'ed in the time of Zyzz, king of aesthetics!

Simply because its how beginners should be training. I see way too many high school kids in the gym to 2 hours of curls and tricep pushdowns and they wonder why they are getting huge. SS is great to build a foundation of size and strength that can LATER be built on and refined using traditional bodybuilding methods.

looks liike a good place to ask my Q...

i'm getting back into lifting after 3 years off due to injury that just wouldnt go away (last 6 months has actually been laziness) - but NY resolution is me getting back to where I was... lifted from 14-19 and looked good

should I do a beginner program or strength or go all out and do PHAT and blast body for a bit

I want to get best results from muscle memory (not correct word - but everyone understands what I mean - my muscles should grow easier due to used to being biggish + similar to beginner gains)... HALP

going to eat at around maintenance as I have done research and this looks like best place to sit for a few months and then adjust - but can;t find clear info on which program

Ya know, as a beginner, you can do compounds for 6-8 or 8-10 or even 8-12 and gain strength fine, you can even throw in some curls and flyes and you'll still gain fine.

I'm the opposite, I fell into the whole derp do SS then SS2.0 then Bill Starr's bull****, gains were lackluster as **** and I was eating at a surplus, switched to a 5 day routine with plenty of compounds and isolations, all either 6-8 or 8-12, gains started coming through, strength didn't suffer.

Lifting in a 1-5 rep range makes you good at lifting in a 1-5 rep range.

There's a split program without any compounds in it? SS is only good for strength. You will probably look the same after it, but with +50 lbs in your lifts

Remember the story about the monkeys who get hosed whenever one tries to climb a ladder to reach some bananas. And soon all the monkeys are replaced but continue to beat the sh!t out of any monkey who tries to reach the bananas despite having no idea why.

That is reddit and that is why they and /fit/ recommend SS.

IMO even before SS everyone should spend a month learning how

    1. to lift with reasonable form, either via PT or videos
    2. to bail out of exercises (squats, bp, deads)
    3. clean up the diet

Idk some people think its the best routine in the world. Honestly wouldn't be bad to start on for a couple months to get use to lifting weights, the compound movements and gain some strength, before moving into a basic hypertophy upper/lower split. Overall the it has been proven that a PHAT type, or DUP, is the most optimal way to train.

Reddit is very cultish. SS may be good, but on reddit it's golden jizz coming out of Mark Rippetoe's cock.

I never followed SS exactly, so I can't really comment on that. Right now I am just lifting heavy with a 5x5 split (dat der ectomorph bodytype). I try to include a lot of compounds such as overhead press, multiple deadlift variations, squat variations, and avoid things such as leg extensions, leg curls, and shoulder isolation exercises. I still do some isolation exercises such as pec flys, calves, lat pull downs and such; but when I upped my compounds I started to see more results. Every body is different though.

I should have said doing a light weight split stalled my gains, basically I was going for too many reps and not enough weight.
    We were all witnesses.

Let them say I misc'ed in the time of Zyzz, king of aesthetics!
