Here is a quick run down of how far my gym is from my house, the fuel cost, government depreciation to your vehicle, and gym membership. What this doesn't include is the time it takes to travel. I think you will find this quite shocking. I did.
Fuel
4.58 miles one way
9.16 miles round trip.
4 days a week- 36.64 miles
5 days a week- 45.8 miles
4 days a week at $4.00 a gallon with truck- $8.62
4 days a week at $3.60 a gallon with BMW- $6.59
5 days a week at $4.00 a gallon with truck- $10.77
5 days a week at $3.60 a gallon with BMW- $8.24
gas for my truck plus membership for both my wife and I
$776.32
gas for BMW if you go to the gym 20 days a month.
$32.97 month
x 12 months
_____________
$395.64 a year.
Depreciation per government rate $0.55/mile
$201.52
gas for both vehicles if drove separately, government depreciation, and memberships
$1373.48. That is including the $500 a year I get through my work benefits for a wellness package.
This is for the guy who said home gyms are more expensive than commercial. The way I see it is if you have the room it is way more practical for a home gym. If you spend the same amount of money you do for a yearly membership somewhere and put that money towards equipment instead, in about three years you will have a damn nice setup. I will have the same amount of money invested in pro style dumbbells, 500 lbs of Ivanko plates, Ivanko barbell, Ivanko curl bar and a rack that im building that will be similar to Rogue's R6 and the Elite Collegiate rack than I will for a membership for one year.

Nice breakdown in cost of going to the gym.

That is a nice breakdown of the costs. I do think a home gym is worth definitely worth it (that's why I'm here)... eventhough I doubt I'll ever find a deal as good as you got on those Ivankos!!!

You can jog there and back and save on the gas and get aerobics in as well for free. However you are going to have to factor in more clothing, shoes and food costs as well as more water and energy use for the shower.

There can be hidden costs to a home gym as well, such as the space required. Devote a room to your gym, and that's a room you didn't need to rent or buy if you didn't have a gym. The price of that will vary with location.
If you put your gym in a garage, figure there's a little extra depreciation on your vehicle(s) for being out in the rain and snow. Maybe you could have rented or bought a home cheaper if it had a smaller garage or no garage. You also get the joy of working out in sweltering heat and freezing cold, even if that's not a direct cost.
I have a garage gym myself. Totally worth it to me. But it's not all wine and roses.

For me... playing constant Arnold videos on my TV blasting epic music.
Dropping a couple thousand dollars and having an awesome home gym... you can create something amazing...
Moving into an apartment? Sell off the equipment you carefully chose that is worth 50%+ what you bought it for.

That's all I use. Been working out at home only, in my bedroom.
Agreed. Gotta do your pull ups with a weighted vest too man. Just got myself this one last month, feels....heavy http://gorillasports.nl/sale/2080/gewichtsvest-20-kg
But immediately started making progress, visible in non-weighted pull ups.
Will be switching to a fixed pull up bar asap instead of the iron gym, as the doorframe is starting to make some scary noise, when doing my weighted reps
The disadvantage of hanging in the doorway (iron gym) is that I can't go full stretch, which limits optimal performance / range of motion.

24 hour gyms suck if u do power lifting exercises...but if u are just a recreational lifter they are ok

[QUOTE=A1phaeus;999589083]Just moved into my new place and i dont have much space...was considering building a bench out in the garage or just getting one of these in the bonus room...what do you use and how much have you spent on dumbells/equipment..i honestly dont think home gyms are worth it since i still have a gym membership ($15) PER MONTH the only real reason i need one of these is for convenience since i work 40 hours per week..what has worked best for you?
try the iron man version five. my father and i used to have it until we ran into financial problems and had to sell it. peace&love. prosper in the light of happiness.

I would say a power cage is a must have. In one piece of equipment (+ FID bench) you get all of the following:
FID bench racks
Shoulder press rack
Dip station
Pullup bar
Deadlift rack
Squat rack
Safety spotter
Sex swing mount (lol)

It's All In The Game
I love my setup. I hated the hassle of commuting to and from gym I used to go to and not really a social person either. I have been putting my home setup together for a while now. For the most part I have waited for steals on Craigslist. Pretty much done now except for flooring and random stuff.
Here is my setup

Small rack currently on craigslist. Can't wait to get space back. Going to build a platform once it is sold

You won't find many Bowflex recommendations on this forum.
What it came down to for me was convenience. With 3 kids and a busy work schedule it makes all the sense in the world to create a home gym. In terms of cost comparison. At $15 a month the break even point would be 20+ years.
Geeze at $15 per month my break even point was 2 years then I bought a nicer bar and added a year to that. all depends on what you spend.
