Roger Ebert said it was the most violent film he had ever seen.

I said the film is the most violent I have ever seen. It will probably be the most violent you have ever seen. This is not a criticism but an observation; the film is unsuitable for younger viewers, but works powerfully for those who can endure it. The MPAA's R rating is definitive proof that the organization either will never give the NC-17 rating for violence alone, or was intimidated by the subject matter. If it had been anyone other than Jesus up on that cross, I have a feeling that NC-17 would have been automatic.

Having said that, nothing to be gained by watching a twenty-minute rape scene.

I just watched Irreversible a few days ago. Had Monica Belluci so I figured it couldn't be too terrible. And it wasn't. Law & Order reruns are more violent. The "20 minute rape scene" is 3.5 minutes of a fully clothed man laying on top of a fully clothed Monica, dry humping her (with both of their crotches not in sight of the camera) while talking dirty to her. The "shocking" part is after this, when he beats her up a little with his fists. We're supposed to be shocked because, you know, it's Monica Belluci ... but the reality is, more violent stuff happens in trailer parks across America every Friday night. So I dunno how this movie makes anyones list of most violent ... for the most part it was so dull I was reading Google News during the movie. Tons of sausage in the movie though - so if you're into that, I guess it's a must-see?

Yeh. I was watching "A Serbian Film" and it was pretty, you know, 3rd-world kinda boring-normal ... then all of a sudden the movie gets "wtf did my eyes just see" disturbing.

Movies are interesting in how they effect you. I have no problem with violence portrayed in an historical context. I believe it was "Normandy," Tom Hanks? That flic was incredibly violent. I don't believe I've ever seen a movie where they did a better job of putting you right down in the middle of what it must have been like. (And granted, it couldn't be, in any real way!) Braveheart was violent as well. But that is what you'd expect for that day and age. It is 'couched' and presented in context. I just can't handle the chainsaw, crazed killer, drug-thug, violence that is portrayed in so many movies today. I know...It sounds strange. Ha!

If you don't mind subtitled films, look for "the raid", an Indonesian film, has our highest rating in NZ (R18) and well and truly deserves it. Ultra violent, not in the saw/hostel kind of way, out and out brutal shooting/stabbing/martial arts sort of way

The remake of Scarface with Al Pachino had the chainsaw sceen (partially) deleted in order to NOT be the first X rated movie for violence.

Personally for me however, I felt Mel had some real mental issues in making that film. If that's what religion is all about, you can keep it. Thr Roman's truely were beyond inhumane in terms of punishment. But people are closer to animals than gods after all. Jesus was unfortunate to say the least, in being treated so brutally. But brutallity of man against man is nothing new, and I don't need to see some sick Austrialian creepazoid's peverted and ulta violent film to understand that. There was no entertainment value what so ever in that film. I don't believe jesus was or is any son of a god, and therefore the whole thing was just below the bottom of the barrel in terms of excessive violence in film, for me. I don't enjoy watching torture. Mock violence is one thing, even docu-drama type violence. But blood spattering torture of a man is not my cup of tea.

Thanks for the forum to discuss these ideas, though, David...As always. I know you can at least appreciate another's point of view, though we don't agree. Hey, I'm sure you can agree that Mel is one sick puppy, right???

Not violent in the regular sense, but very VERY bleak. I needed to watch cute puppy and kitty videos after before I could go to sleep.
