salivary amylase breaks down starches into disaccharides for digestion in the stomach and primarily small intestine (which then long story short becomes your glucose) and absorbed into bloodstream.... there is no calorie content of things "sitting and spitting" per se.

i try and confuse my body. i am against doing the same things, eating the same things, etc. I get burnt out by it and I can tell when my body does too. Yesterday I ended up having two bananas, lots of chicken, some dark chocolate, greek yogurt with plain cheerios... and im starving. im ten weeks out and i will switch over to full keto or IF with keto ( havent decided yet). i want to keep my cardio low for as long as i can so i dont end up doing like 3 hours like some people.

right now im heading out to buy keto sticks for the last half of prep, then run 7 and head to the gym. my legs are feeling much better (although still sore) but i am able to actually walk without stumbling (you all know what im talking about! lol)

so as i had said, this week marks the beginning of the end for me. It's ten weeks for my show, and I have slowly lost and not been anal about aything. coming off diet for vacation, not doing my cardio some days hasn't been a big issue and nothing to worry about. Now, however, I will not miss a cardio session or a lift. I still get one cheat a week and will just have it on a weekend evening like usual. Last night was mine...I'm going to keep it a window of an hour or two and just eat but not stuff myself silly like I have in the past.

keto it is until the week of the show, and i view keto as:
    -carbs <20g per day
-fats ~30-40g i try to keep around 30g but if they increase then sobeit
-protein = >145g...as long as it is above my bodyweight.

cardio is as i feel needed. yesterday i ran 7 miles and then biked for 30min just because i missed cardio the day before. I am a cyclist just as much as i am a bodybuilder so if i want to do cardio then i will.

i am going to also keep intermittent fasting in, and during the day continue to tide myself over with sugar free lifesavers and tea.

That's why I like untested NPC, more competition, especially since its become so diluted with bikini girls jumping to figure too soon. I would crush in the natty world but I want to go pro in IFBB. I'll do well on national level but may have to "step up my game" at the pro level . But for now I've got to tap out my genetic potential before I consider alternatives.
Coming out of "retirement"...Meg is training for a Figure competition...again!!!

so many girls i know from around here (northeast ohio) take... they take from the beginning and never see what they can do by themselves.i mean maybe i would if i would have been told by a trainer (but i have great genetics, and they dont LOL...but i mean they act like their trainer is a god). it makes no sense why you'd want to wreck your body forever.

    Red face

well my leg workout sucked yesterday, derek was back in the gym maybe that's why LOL. no kidding.

so im hungry, lol...all ive had was some sugar free candy, tea, and a handful of grapes today (take them with my thermo and caffeine pills so i dont puke). usually eat at around 4 after work. yesterday i had some chicken breast with cal free hot sauce, a few bites of white potato, grilled chicken on a salad, some pb, and half protein pancakes that tasted like cardboard. ew.
    hahaha

    *******
also, i got a fantastic email from someone. this just made my morning! i haven't had time to respond to her yet but i've never been told im inspirational/motivational before. She makes me want to ride the next few days on my roadie...havent been out for a while due to ****ty snowy weather up here and the indoor blowssssss. Will share:

    Hi Kim,

Came across your contest prep post on bb.com, you’ve really got an awesome thread going there; have enjoyed reading about your prep so far. Just found you on IG as well (I am fiona.hansen91. )

Alsooo, saw that you were a cyclist to! That’s awesome, makes so much more sense now can absolutely see where you got those amazing legs from! I used to cycle when I was younger (for the Western Australia state team as a junior ;P) both Road and Track. Gave it up when I was 17 to finish studying and go to University, but still have my Cervelo and absolutely love going out on a Sunday morning for a lazy 100km and when it comes to HIIT theres nothing better right!? Wasn’t a sprinter so I haven’t got the freaking awesome quads(yet), but working on em!! (Squats for the win :P)

Anyway, nothing much else, really just wanted to email you because you’re just the kind of role model the fitfam out there need and sometimes its super nice to hear that!

Thanks for all the inspiration, don’t ever give up! Have a massive amount of admiration for your grit, your physique and so looking forward to seeing you kill it in your upcoming show.

Good luck and keep up the hard work. Thanks again!!

    Fiona,

PS. If you’re ever in Western Australia bring your bike!!

Good luck with your contest prep. Hunger is a bitccch that's a fact. All i can say is don't think about it and focus on your goal. And chew and spit a lot. LULZ.

    SCIENCE OF KETOSIS:
so it was day three of what should be "keto"..now i wrote my thesis on ketosis and basically know everything there is TO know about it, and im not induced yet. This could mean a few things: sugar alcohols in my sugar free candies/gums are spiking my insulin and yada yada, basically meaning they are treated as sugar. i havent checked to see what kind of SA's are in them because, frankly, id be heartbroken. maltitol and malt-syrups are similar to sugar in nutrition and cal content, but i am positive they are not malts. derek bought me 16 bags of sugar free lifesavers for christmas! LOL. i peed yesterday morning, and this morning and both negative - which means i could be using ketones for energy, although common at night not very in my case since sleeping doesn't require energy stores to be tapped. Another thing is that my fats are too low. proteins are converted to sugars due to the structures (gluconeogenic vs ketogenic amino acids) and unless there is ample fat to aid ketosis, they will simply convert to sugar in a state of malnourishment. yesterday i made a point to up my fats...i ate salad dressings, had some cheese that was on a salad (i dont even like cheese), and had a piece of bacon before bed. i had a little bit of pb too. negative this am, so today we are going to do some tests to figure out what the deal is. the fact that im intermittent fasting may also play a role, and be turning these proteins into sugars faster than I thought....

    SO HERE's THE EXPERIMENT:
    changes?
-intermittent fasting is being edited a little bit
    -more fats are being implemented
-sugar free candy and gum is being eliminated
I started off this morning with my pill routine-thermogenics, inhalers for my asthma, and instead of my small bite of a carb to eat with for when I take my pills, i cooked 6g of bacon (now 6g of bacon is like nothing...see picture below).

i naturally cut the majority of the fat off of it also but kept a little, and had a few licks of peanut butter-maybe a teaspoon.
i am headed off to work shortly and am pulling my sf candy today. i am going to bring my bag of nuts, and have 6 almonds every few hours. no protein with this.
get my cardio done, and then i am going to have dinner as usual, probably just chicken with some sort of fat with it (either cheese, dressing, or a fat based sauce..but obviously a small amount of either).
same thing for next meal..but i will have either a zero carb protein shake with almonds or chicken with almonds.
next meal before bed will be a shake with bacon.

let's see what i pee tomorrow! and break.

also updated progress pics...the lighting was terrible and im horrible at taking pics of myself especially my back. these dont do it justice.

Since you are making multiple changes to jump into ketosis, do you plan on reversing anything to determine the root cause? Or do you not care?

I didn't use the keto sticks so only assumed I was in ketosis with carbs <15g, we upped my fats via ground beef and whole eggs. Was soooo yummy after dieting for so long, but I did eventually get sick of eating the fattier beef after the first few days we did keto.

I figured that I am a chemical engineer so I too am pretty anal about understanding what variables affect particular outcomes. I guess at this point is more important for you to get in to ketosis as quick as possible and worry later about what the issue was. I would be interested to know, especially about this artificial sweetener/sugar alcohols and such. I cannot do plain black coffee (yet) so I tend to use a tablespoon of Stevia or a packet of Splenda to cut the bitterness.

Great thread! It inspired me to workout hard.

I have to say however, reading it all in a day, I kinda got the perspective that with only 10 weeks out you seem to me serving 2 masters.

Your goal is to shred for the comp, but the workouts and cardio seem extreme, as if I'm reading a journal on someone who's goal is to prepare for hell week as a navy seal. For instance, things seemed to be humming along nicely, but after the 7 mile run, as good as it may have felt, you seem to be complaining more of aches and pains. And I see you're used to killing your legs and love it too.

Maybe something has to give? I see your a fan of IF, the founder of IF is personally against medium to heavy cardio due to the wear down of the CNS. That may explain your crabbiness.

Really tho, you have an amazing muscle base as everyone agrees, instead of going all keto, and adding more cardio, just have fun weight workouts while you remain in a calorie deficit for the next ten weeks? It seems the extreme workouts, and cardio are only leading to increased appetite, overtraining, and perhaps less return on investment.

I think even with the best laid plans, you will experience overtraining with competition prep. To get to such low levels of body fat is very taxing and the body will not recover well on such few calories and lifting a heavy a possible which is a must for muscle preservation, you can't afford to loaf around with the weights when in such severe deficits. This is why you don't stay competition lean but for those few days around competition.

Not sure if its the same for Kim, but running is my stress relief from the monotony of SS cardio (despise cardio machines) and gives me time to think and get my mind right to dig in deeper when it gets tough.

i came from a background of running and race bikes every season, from crits to holding 2nd place in the flying 200 in ohio (track cycling).... i go hard in every aspect of my life. no reason to halfass anything to be honest! i love running, today was a 6 miler and a new pair of running shoes for my birthday! i suppose some people hate this lifestyle but to me it's about the pain and joys, it sucks and i am hungry sometimes but if i miss a workout or miss a cardio oh well, if i eat something off diet oh well... i do enough to make up for it. my girlfriends who are terrified to miss anything or eat a carb are nuts. i love IF because during the work week it's incredibly easy, and i run because i can get away with it and not lose muscle...the benefits of an underactive thyroid are myriad for bodybuilding!

so when i was at the running store down the street to pick up a few things, i grabbed a new sweaty band (if you're a girl and never tried them, i HIGHLY suggest you do. hands down the BEST hair band in existence, my hair does not budge in them) and the quote on the tag was a great one. i saved it and taped it to my bumper sticker container. I feel like it explains kind of how I view life perfectly:
"Never back away, relish life, just sayin"
This quote also goes for this contest prep as well. I am not one of those girls who lives, eats, and breathes the NPC/IFBB. who is obsessed with fitness and bodybuilding and cries if they can grab some bodyfat. I am not a former "fat chick" who now has issues with eating because they are terrified to go back to the way they were. I am not an OCD exerciser. What I am is an athlete. I have ran in two marathons, raced countless cycle races, done tons of century races (100 milers), I even rollerblade for fun in the summertime and obviously snowboard as much as I can weather permitting, and was a competitive gymnast since I was a toddler until high school. This has been going on since I can remember! All of these things make up ME. Contest prep isn't the end of my life, I just give all I have to everything. Bike season is quickly approaching and took the roadie out for the first time this year, this morning. I have nearly every bike workout of mine logged that I've ever done on my laptop because I rarely go out without my Garmin! Realistically I care much more about cycling and snowboarding than I do the NPC! If I lived out west I would love to be a pro snowboarder, and if I was taller and didn't have such upper body muscle mass I'd be a fairly competitive cyclist (road..but track I can hold my own). I feel as if people get the wrong impression of me since I am "competing"...but realistically I am just getting on stage to show off my life. not my hard work, it's not hard work - it's just what I do, and what I enjoy doing. I would like to win, but I couldn't give a **** if I dont. I am not going to stop snowboarding, or running, or biking just because of a stupid little contest, that is not to mention judged on QUALITATIVE, SUBJECTIVE, and frankly political BS. Races are won objectively, and quantitatively. May the best athlete win...but not in this sport. I love my physique. seriously, I am very happy with how I look and I woudn't change anything for the world. I have a 24" waist and 24" quads, that is awesome in and of itself. so what?
I'M COMPETING TO SHOW OFF A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, NOT ONE OF OBSESSION AND STARVATION.

I give 200% to all that I do and enjoy every minute of my life; my most favorite times of the day are when I'm cycling in my spandex(lol) or running a few miles. If I'm not lean enough or anorexic enough or drugged up enough to win then sobeit, OH WELL, but the next day I am just going to continue to do what I've been doing all along...same routine, different day, and then race some bikes and win some flying 200 races in 2013, and hopefully take the ohio state title! hell yeah.
