    Dumb question of the day!

Does a protein shake count as an empty stomach? I ask cause I've been experiencing diarrhea for the last few days and the only thing I can think of that's causing it would be caffein. I take a caffein tablet (or pre workout) in the morning either before or after a protein shake depending on how tired i am. I know taking caffein on an empty stomach can cause issues but is a shake still considered an empty stomach if I consume it prior to the caffeine?

Thanks for listening to my dumb question. Hope it wasn't too dumb.

A protein shake is just processed food marketed as a supplement, thus your question is like asking if eating a BigMac "counts as an empty stomach".

Hmm. Sorta helpful but not really. I understand that it's not empty in a literal sense, I'm just wondering whether or not its considered full enough to rule out the caffein as a problem. Or maybe I'm missing your point?

Empty stomach or not, I have a very hard time seeing a caffeine tab causing that issue. I have heard many more people mention that protein shakes give them digestive problems. I do not believe that having a shake in your stomach would still leave it "empty," but I also believe that the shakes may be more your issue than caffeine.

I take caffeine on an empty stomach. It might be slightly faster acting but not something to worry about unless you really are taking the p**s with the dosage.

You are indicating that you are consuming a protein shake, which means you're consuming between ~150 calories and ~900 calories, depending on the composition of that protein shake.

I've been taking gold standard whey for as long as I can remember and I've never had an issue with it. I'm also not new to caffeine pills and I haven't had any issues with them in the past either. I've recently changed my routine and go to the gym in the morning rather than in the afternoon like I used to. I don't have any appetite to eat in the morning so a shake is as good a breakfast as I'm going to get. When I worked out in the afternoon, I'd eat breakfast, take caffeine or pre workout then hit the gym without a problem.

I don't drink coffee cause it doesn't do anything for me. I'd need to down like 3 cups for it to have any effect

If you don't have an appetite in the morning, why not just skip breakfast?

Hunger pangs at the gym aren't fun. For some reason a shakes puts them at bay until after my workout

No - it does not. You didn't say what kind of protein, but if it is Soy, you have your answer!

I've thought about IF. Are you on it? If so, have you noticed better results than regular dieting? I'm currently just on a deficit. Getting in about 1880 cals a day, always starving so IF seems inticing

Better results? What better results do you expect?

Diet adherence and preference is what matters
