Powerlifting, unless you drop down atg for a throw, when i throw i take a wide stance and push with my back leg as i turn and i found that my throw increased when i started squatting powerlifter style (im a powerlifter anyway so i had to)

Jesus Christ. Disregard every answer until mine.

The answer is both... or niether. It depends on your own personal weaknesses, time of training year, about a million other factors. No one thing is better than anything else. Check out that Dan John link above. He once wrote that "Everything works for a short time and nothing works forever." You've got to think of it as a movement being trained. Developed hip extension is good for throwing strength. Every kind of squat works on hip extension at different leverages. So, every squat is a good squat to do.

But, if you look into some of Anatoli Bondachuks (sp?) writings, he stops his throwers once they aquire a 500lb back squat. His reasoning is that speed dimishes after this strength threshold. Is it true? I have no clue. I think it was the 1972 olympics where 2 of his athletes got gold and silver in the hammer throw... and he got the bronze. So there might be something to his methods.

Anyway, the answer is both. Or neither.

Was gonna say this. Why limit yourself to one? Why not try high bar, low bar, front squats, and other variations and see what works.

I third checking out Dan John. I also think its more important to squat regularly with good form than obsess whether you are ATG or parallel. Most people who claim to squat ATG are actually still a couple of inches above parallel

It doesn't really matter. There are many, many variables which are more determinant on results in the throwing events. Squat however you want.
