I really want a heavy punching bag for my house, but I dont really have a place to put one. Would I be happy with a freestanding one as an alternative or would it basically be a waste of money. I am just looking for something to punch for conditioning and cardio.

Having been involved in kickboxing since I was about 13 years old, in my opinion, the free standing bags can't compare to a hung bag. I'm not a big guy and I could punch and kick these over at will. Also, if they don't go over they def move around a lot.
One idea would be a thick lag eye hook that goes up through the ceiling drywall and into a joist. Then, use a 2" or 3" spring between the eye hook and the bag's hook. This spring reduces a ton of the stress on the joist. The hole is small and would be easy to patch later if you so desired (like a 1/2" hole). However, I'm not sure if the constant stress on the joist, even with the spring, could eventually cause cracking in the drywall around seems, etc.
I used to hang my bag outside and train with snow on the ground. I couldn't do that now (or would choose not to...lol) but hanging the bag from a tree could be an option.

Find a way to mount, hang, or stack a whole bunch of tires up in a corner.
Use heavy gloves. I use hockey gloves myself.
If you hang it right, you also have a good target for uppercuts.
Extra benefit is it is indestructible so you can also hit it with dumbbells, or with batons, or kick it, etc....
Another bonus is they are FREE!
I have also seen people use rolls of carpet and such. There are many, many options.
The free-standing or water filled ones just don't seem to be stable enough. I imagine you could find one to bolt down or weight down the base extremely, but most people prefer to just find a good place to hang one so it isn't a rigid unmovable mass.
