I'd hit Steven Seagal with Randy Couture. That's the only real test.

I always thought this as well... but apparently he competed pretty heavily in full-contact karate and kickboxing for a good number of years before he ever got to Hollywood.

If it turned into the typical wrestling/submission hold type of deal then Couture would win easily. But if the fighters remained on their feet I wouldn't be so quick to count Seagal out, yes he's a bit goofy and full of himself but the guy was and may very still be a badass.

Corbi, you are absolutely correct, sir.

    Yes, Segal is goofy.

But guys, MMA is a sport. It has rules, just like boxing, and any other "combat sport".

What happens when you take away the rules?

My opinion is.....it will take a combination of brains, charisma, strength, and stamina to be a winner.

The earliest UFC's didn't have any rules other than no eye-gouging an no biting. Watch some of those to find out "what happens."

    Actually no, they didn't.

There were no time limits, no weight classes, no biting or eye gouging, and that's about it.. What, exactly, are you calling "early?"

    Emergence of stricter rules

Although UFC used the tagline "There are no rules!" in the early 1990s, the UFC did in fact operate with limited rules. There was no biting, no eye gouging, and the system frowned on (but allowed) techniques such as hair pulling, headbutting, groin strikes and fish-hooking.

saw an early UFC fight with no weight class variance, had this big but kinda slow dude against this skrawny dude who jumped and flipped around the octagon like a damn monkey, once the big dude grabbed monkey man it was all but over. he body slammed the dude and then used his elbow to knock the guy out with about 3 shots to the head.

    Yep.

The first ones were brutal... I remember seeing Tank Abbott beat some big Samoan guy so bad that he lay flat on his back twitching. Oleg Taktarov's face bleeding like a stuck pig, while he not only kept fighting, but didn't even slow down, etc...

I am disappointed in seeing how much Segal has let himself go and for me that would the biggest hindering factor for Segal. Couture has made his place in MMA to which there is no doubt. Fighting with rules and fighting without rules are two totally seperate games. Who would win I won't even say.

I will say that all of you who count Segal out are a bit hasty because he never was just a 'hollywood star fighter'. Look into the record books and you will see that Segal was the very first white guy to 'be allowed' to open a dojo in Japan. He also holds a distinction that Bruce Lee & Chuck Norris share with him and that is a #1 in the World ranking as the best martial arts instructor in the world. That was no small feat for anyone and not lightly handed out. Steven truly knows his stuff and I personally think that his conditioning is the only thing that stands against him in a all or nothing fight.

I can't remember which magazine interviewed his Japanese wife (If they were truly married), but she was pi**ed that he left her and starting spilling the beans (or making up stories of her own, who knows). She said it was actually her mother's Dojo and that the so-called "Challenge Fights" over there were pretty embelished. She quieted up pretty quick, but that was @ the time he was actually making big movies and no doubt $$ also. Same article looked into the claims made about him training some special forces. One of the guys was quoted as saying that S.S. "Screamed like a little girl." cause he was having trouble getting back into a life raft somewhere, I believe, in the Gulf of Mexico during a training excercise. There were other things in there that basically made him out to be a turd. But who knows, they might've been turned down for an interview with him and decided to blast him. I think it was a magazine called "Spy" or something like that. Could be BS, the truth, or somewhere inbetween. Not saying he wasn't a bada** back in the day, but let's be real about his conditioning. He'd gas after a minute, minute and a half tops.

Yeah, Yeah. but on that note, I doubt that the only Style Seagal knows is akido. I knew an instructor who got his black belt at 19 an went out thinking he was all badass. Well some street fighter took issue with that and kicked the crap out of him. The solution was to broaden his fighting techniques. Bruce Lee did the same thing, one style is not complete enough. Watching some of the clips where Segal instructs MMA fighters shows us that he is a more rounded martial artist master than some want to give him credit for.

Once again, while I believe Segal has the tools to fight Couture, I think that the good life has removed too much for Seagal to really back up a 'any time anywhere' invitation. To fight Couture Seagal needs to get back into serious training and not for a week or two either.

You guys have been watching too many action movies. Couture was an Olympic wrestler and was champion in two weight divisions in UFC. Seagal is a TV fighter ... We don't even know if Seagal has ever been in a fight. Plus, he is now a fat old man.

    Joe Rogan on Seagal

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Often, the solution is have some more realistic [applicable, if you prefer] training, not necessarily broader, per se. A boxer is always dangerous. As is a wrestler. A wrestler who can hit hard and fast as well? Goodnight, vast majority of "martial artists" out there. Heh. Actually, in many cases, the solution is to drop the ego, and stop getting into fights, before permanent damage is suffered.

Props also to muay thai guys, and some kickboxers. The ones that get it right, are like boxers with more options. Ouch. Telling, that mauy thai has adopted boxing strikes along the way, mind you. It's what you'd expect, if you're wanting the best striking system in the world (which is what they often claim).

And so on. Broader =/= better. Better = better.

Puh-lease. Seagal's death would not be out of the question, in this scenario. And it's nothing to do with conditioning. It's to do with bullsh!t martial arts vs. applicable ones. Sad, but true.

Could you elaborate on how charisma helps win fights?
