Hey everyone... I posted my first thread yesterday but realized that I hadn't submitted a formal introduction. From of life of absolutely no physical training whatsoever, genetics overrode that and I have always been very lean. Age 18 I was 5'8" 100 lbs - married at 22 at 110 lbs. Then just sit at a desk or stood all day for my jobs. At about age 35 I started to get a little bit of a belly because I guess the metabolism slowed somewhat and now the bad eating attributed to a bit of a gut. Really, though, my midsection was the only place I saw fat.
About two years ago, I started eating healthy and maintained my weight but still had a bit of a gut.
n January, when I decided that before my 40th birthday (12-12-12), I wanted to work out and see what happened. At 39, I weighed about 147 lbs and 5'10" tall. I hired a trainer at the beginning of the year and boy was I in for a surprise. First squats were 20 lbs on a smith machine!!!! First bench was 40 lbs! Unbelievably weak!
I bulked through the end of May this year and gained 11 lbs. Then, on June first, I started leangains (with my trainer) and currently sit at 138.5 lbs and dropped 4.5 inches around the gut area! My goal is to see a bit of abs before beginning a bulk again on my anniversary date of January 12.
I can't believe how much strength I've gained. But most of all, I've committed working out and eating healthy as a lifestyle.
My goal for March 2014: Weigh 160 lbs at 10% bf. Not sure if it's attainable yet or not, but it's my goal.
I enjoy reading all your posts and am still learning so much on top of what my trainer has taught me. He's an awesome guy and has done wonders with a gutty skinny guy of nearly 40 years old.
Cheers!
Matt

I would not mind being 5'8, however not quite that thin. Best of luck to you and am looking forward to seeing and hearing about your progress.

Hey buddy. I only joined yesterday as well. I used to train 15 - 19 years ago but always focused on strength. I never worked on reducing body fat, although playing sports kept me reasonably in shape.
Now at 37, my goals are a little different. Metabolism has slowed and I have a belly. I still want strength gains but my priority is removing the fat which has become rather unsightly (to me at least).
Part of the reason for the weight gain is that I gave up smoking six months ago and have piled on the lbs since. Yep, I know, bad lifestyle - but it's all behind me and i'm now heading in the right direction.
Best of luck with your training and continued motivation.

Welcome aboard
We all have our good days and our bad ones. What separates us is those who can turn a bad day into a good one...
When your not training or running just know no matter what some place someone is doing one more set or one more mile. Stay motivated!!!
