after japan was destroyed in ww2, western culture got real big over there

The Afghani's are going pretty well IMO, resisted pretty much every major army the planet has produced.

Not much difference here. Japan wanted to conquer the world and failed. The Allies weren't about conquering the world. Japan surrendered because FDR was gonna go all out on them if they didn't. Japan dun goofed the second time around when they didn't accept US's offer for them to surrender after Hiroshima, hence Nagasaki. And even though the bomb dropped in Nagasaki missed its mark, it still managed to kill 50,000 people. Japan didn't accept some of the conditions like Emperor system but ultimately surrender was their only option. It's why the General killed himself samurai suicide style after they stupidly rejected the second plea to surrender, thinking his army of 3,000,000 was gonna be enough. Hiroshima was predominantly a military city too, there was a reason it wasn't attacked by air raids yet since they wanted to test the full capabilities of the nuclear bomb.
