Also, you can watch/read The Golden Compass before OR after. It's more or less a fill-in for events outside of the films/books already mentioned in the thread, with some recurring characters in the same universe.

Nah, you start with Finding Nemo, then they find the fat fukin hobitt, so The Hobitt is right after, THEN it transitions into Harry Potter

The book had some scenes which was not possible with effects at the time the movie was made, so yes I would say, read the book!
